Forum problems, Search, Emails, Lost posts

Post by GeoffB » Fri Sep 09, 2016 11:04 pm

As some of you will have seen earlier, the forum developed various problems over the last 12 hours and eventually crashed completely.

Mr. Delcamp has had to restore it on the old server, from a backup file. This means that:
- forum emails are disabled again, so email notifications are not currently available;
- some posts and new registrations will have been lost, between the backup time and the time of the crash.

Furthermore he has come to the conclusion that the inbuilt forum search engine is at the root of the problems and can no longer cope with the size of the forum. Consequently, and with great regret, he has deactivated it, and will be installing a Google search tool in its place in the near future. This will not provide the features of the previous "advanced" forum search, but should at least be stable.

I'm sorry to have to pass on this frustrating news but unfortunately it can't be helped. The forum is a victim of its own success!

I sometimes use google to find things on the message board anyways, as I sometimes found it responded to what I was looking for better. So, this isn't all bad! It's too bad that the migration has been causing some issues and taking so much time up! Thank you to the administration for all the hard work!

Aha. At least it's a temporary problem. I was wondering. Thanks for all the work.

The google search operator "site:" will give you the same results and you can do it from any google search bar.
