I use the german produced König & Meyer guitar stands. I keep the three guitars that I use the most in their stands in my practice room, which is a room devoid of dogs, cats, children and the like. I only use the guitar cases when I have to take the guitars somewhere else. During the winter when it usually get low humidity I use a hycrometer and sometimes I put a utensil of water on the heating device to increase humidity. I have never experienced a guitar cracking due to humidity problems, not even if made of brazilian rosewood.

I keep a hygrometer in the room I play guitar in. When the humidity is in an acceptable range, I tend to leave the guitar out on the stand for the day and put it away at night. However, you do have to be careful about damaging it if that room gets a lot of traffic. Someone could easily bump a guitar off the stand and create some damage. Luckily, my living room doesn't get much traffic at all, so it's pretty safe. I only have to keep my 4 year old son out of there! hahaha..

A danger with stands is that one of the dogs (if you have 5 like I do) might lift his leg against it, or one of the cats might try it as a scratching post...my new guitar lives in its case, resting between the pc table & the wardrobe.

Also remember that cases are only effective if used correctly, (i.e. closed and latched). I recently had an unfortunate incident where I left a nice luthier guitar in its case on a chair with the lid open, albeit against my better judgement, as I figured it would be okay for a minute or two. Wrong! We have a very active cat who frequently loves to jump inside my open guitar case. Unfortunately this time there was a guitar inside it, and said cat tipped the case dumping the instrument face down onto the floor. The guitar escaped with minor dings and scratches but as the case flipped, the latch hit another guitar which was close by, badly scratching the top. Lesson learned. By all means protect your guitar, keep it properly humidified etc. but if you store it in its case, use those latches!!

I have two guitars and each has a guitar stand as well as a hard case. However, they sleep in their respective cases because (1) the temperature and humidity are more stable, and (2) we have cats who seem to romp every night around 3 am.
