Chlorinated water in public swimming pools. I'm trying to combat the damage to my nails by putting on a little petroleum jelly before and after swimming.

At the end of July, I'll find out if sculling is an enemy, as I will be taking a one week long sculling class.

An indirect enemy I discovered to my cost about a week before my D05 level exam on the forum - a splinter. I was using my right hand thumb nail to help ease it out. A few hours later I realised the nail was split. The loss seems to have affected the other RH fingers too, or perhaps it's just the exam nerves!

Bass guitar strings. Every time I get a bass playing gig I lose a nail. I've resigned myself to playing with a pick, it still happens. I wind up catching a nail on a string.

Computer mouse. Completely destroyed my nails (switching to a trackpad solved the problem).

Cold. After battling with the food in our freezer, I couldn't feel my fingers and I'm sure that's not going to help my playing.

Anything involving a workshop with a concrete floor. Drop a tool, reach down to pick it up and then that disheartening sound/sensation of a carefully tended nail getting damaged.
