El Marabino - How to kill the open E

Post by TheCardMaker » Wed Mar 15, 2017 5:40 pm

On the third bar of El Marabino, there is a B chord which is played (I think) P-P-I-M-A and on the A there is an open E, which needs to be gone at the start of the next bar because there is then an open A

Question is, how are we killing this E? With thumb or left hand somehow?

I'd do it with the back of my thumb when playing the low A on the 5th string.

That's the one option I never thought of, currently killing it just before the end of the bar in which it appears, before mobilizing my thumb for the 'A' - your idea will make it work better musically, I'll give that a try, thanks!

Failing that, try your nose. The audience will love it. In the good old days, we used to give a starving waif a shiny penny to stand close by, waiting for a signal to stop the string. I'm sure others can think of other ways to stop that string?

Ha! It's good idea but then I'd be running the risk of being upstaged. Everyone would be talking about his technique, the amazing dexterity of the Mystery String Stopper being the subject of every review. I'd be in the way I feel....

I've seen players play harmonics with their nose. It works.
