Jason Vieaux played a piece that I wrote.

Post by Christopher Freitag » Sun Jun 11, 2017 5:46 am

A report from the 17th annual Cleveland International Guitar Festival:

Last August Jason and his wife had their second child, a daughter named Evangelene. He posted a newborn picture to Twitter and in the days that followed a little tune started turning in my head. I wrote it down in a little guitar arrangement and sent it to him as a gift. He sent me a lovely thank you in reply.

On Friday, Jason gave a wonderful recital to open the festival. For his first encore, he played my little lullaby for Evangelene. It was a wonderfully generous act on his part, and it gave me a memory that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Must be nice to hear an excellent guitarist play your piece. Did he bring out things more than you had expected, or change or improve it in any way?

Btw. Just listened to your "Waltzing Bachwards". Enjoyed that very much.

That's fantastic. I can only imagine what a high you must have felt hearing your tune played live by him. Well done.

That's tremendous! I would have been thrilled if that had happened to me.

The only thing I've written is a transcription of John Cage's 4'33" for guitar. I'm playing it right now.

I was at the concert which was fantastic in every way but Chris's piece was really beautiful. Very touching. It was a terrific festival fantastic concerts, one of the best festivals I have been to and I have been to a lot of them. Chris is a super great guy too as we talked at length about guitar, life, careers etc. Great time

The piece itself is dead simple; just a short tune with a simple accompaniment and then repeated with harmonics. But he made it sound like so much more with his phrasing--it turned into something much richer.

Thanks for the "Waltzing Bachwards" comment...that was the first thing I wrote for guitar and flute and it has great sentimental value to me. I'm glad you enjoyed it; PM me if you would like the score.

I'll post it here. As you will see, it is a simple as can be; I almost didn't send it to him because of that. But he's been very good to me and since it was his new daughter I thought "Well, why not?" I never expected to hear it in concert!
