Major composers who composed for guitar

Post by hackedpineapple » Sun Oct 01, 2017 7:25 pm

I'm searching for a new composer to get me going and I am curious to see how many major composers have composed for the guitar. The only ones that come to mind are Rodrigo and Tedesco but then I hit a roadblock. Any help would be useful, thanks in advance.

Benjamin Britten: Nocturnal
William Walton: Five Bagatelles
Heitor Villa-Lobos: Five Preludes, Twelve etudes, Suite Populaire Bresilienne

A lot depends on how you opt to define "major composers". If you are looking for the Great European Big Names, you will be frustrated quickly. But if you consider a "major composer" to be one who showed fluency and competence in writing music for a variety of forms and contexts, then your list expands pretty quickly.

In addition to the ones David named; Niccolo Paganini, Manuel de Falla, Manuel Ponce, Federico Moreno-Torroba, Malcolm Arnold, Michael Tippett, Hans Werner Henze, Albert Ginastera, ...
If all else fails, try reading the instructions...

Lennox Berkeley. And his son, Michael. Stephen Dodgson is another famous Brit who write for guitar.

Another big name: Frank Martin. And, Pierre Boulez, if you count ensemble music with guitar.

Roberto Gerhard is another.

Beat me to it on those two - so we'll add Arnold Schoenberg on the basis of ensemble.

In the sense that I would understand "major composers" to mean the answer is none. But if we're going for a wider definition then surely Fernando Sor needs to be added to the list?

Franz Schubert actually composed a small work for guitar and male choir "zur namensfeier des vaters". Also in Rossini's Barber of Seville there is a guitar part for an aria "Se il mio nome"

Is Federico Mompou considered a 'major composer'?

If Mompou, then Turina, for sure!

A couple more Brits: Alan Rawsthorne, Nicholas Maw. A Finn: Magnus Lindberg.

There really are so many composers, especially in the 20th-21st centuries, who have written guitar pieces amongst a broader output (if that is one's criteria: the OP never actually specified what he/she considered to be a "major composer"), that the list could go on and on. (And, that's a wonderful thing, isn't it!)

All well-known and many obscure composers for guitar who were active in the period from 1775 to 1910 are described here, with detailed reviews of their output:

Darius Milhaud wrote a piece for Segovia which he called Segoviana just to make the point as clear as possible. I assume Segovia didn't like it as he never played it. I have a copy and I have to admit it is among the pieces I intend to tackle "some day".
