New Guitar Day (video added)

Post by cedartop » Fri Oct 06, 2017 7:43 pm

I am very near my retirement date and decided that I would give myself a new guitar honoring the occasion. My new Traphagen spruce and Brazilian double-top arrived today and I am very excited. After I've played it a few days I'll post a recording to this topic, but it already sounds great. Here are a couple of pics:

Very nice. How much difference does Cedar vs Spruce make with a double top? Nomes or balsa?

This is nomex, as is the cedar. Dake has experimented with balsa, but I don't think he is quite as pleased with the results yet. Since I've just gotten the spruce, its a bit early to say. Both guitars still have the tonal qualities you expect from cedar or spruce, so I would say that whatever wood you prefer will work in a similar manner to what you are used to. My perception is that I have to push the spruce a bit more to get the sound out, but that it is more responsive to the pushing than the cedar is (but that is just comparing it to my cedar double top). Also, Dake is using a slightly different bracing pattern now than he did in 2011. Both guitars are easy to play. My early opinion of the spruce is that it has more of a singing quality in the trebles than other spruces I have owned at this point in their development. Dake says the spruce doubletops continue to change over a shorter time frame than traditional spruces (more happens in less time).

Congratulations and happy new guitar day!! She certainly looks very pretty from the photos you posted (especially the back).

I'm not sure whether it's just the lighting but the top looks a little dark for a new spruce guitar. Is there some sort of tint applied?

Its just the lighting. There is no tint applied. There was too much glare to see the top very well unless it was sort of in the shade.

Congratulations. Now you need to obtain two more Traphagens with hybrid double top (cedar and spruce), one with spruce on the outside, and the other with cedar.
