Does anyone else put vaseline on their fingertips?

Post by botswanajohn » Wed Oct 11, 2017 11:36 am

I live in a dry climate (the Kalahari Desert) and my hands become very dry. The fingertips of my right hand often produce a rough sort of sound on the strings so I apply a little bit of vaseline to the fingertips. This produces a sweeter more controlled sound. Does anybody else do this?

David Russell probably popularized the technique.

My teacher uses Vaseline, especially in concert. I prefer to use a moisturizer usually with a glycerin in it because my skin absorbs it better than a petroleum product. I need it in the winter when the dryness here is just like that in the Kalahari!

I use bag balm. I put it on my fingertips about every other day when I go to bed. Every day was too much. Keeps the callouses from drying out and cracking. Pretty much the same type of stuff. Just wash the residue off in the morning.

I use lip balm. I put a little square of static cling plastic on top of the upper bout, put on a blob of Carmex and spread it around, and then dap my nails in it before playing. I learned this from the wonderful young Czech guitarist Petra Polackova.

This is interesting. Lip balm sounds like a good idea. Is there a best product recommendation? Do any of these damage the strings?

Ditto here. It works beautifully and it's always there. You can "apply" it to your fingertips even when on stage because it just looks like you're scratching your forehead.

Can applying vaseline on fingerstips, by any chance, reduce the squeaking sound when moving across fretboard? thanks! :D

Jack Duarte told me that Andres Segovia did this in concert, leaving a small bit of Vaseline near the heel of his guitar that he'd dip into between pieces.

I understand Elliot Fisk did this, so I dubbed it "fisk oil". Works great.

I use lanolin on the fingertips and sometimes cuticles of both hands, which works well.
