I use a drummer's stool. Adjustable height, compact, rolls, comfortable and reasonably priced.

Avoid any wooden chair with the rounded tops of the legs protruding slightly above the seat.
Can I ask why avoid the wooden stool?

I think seat Height is the most important thing - after faffing about with cushions and stools and benches, I found a particular dining chair to be the perfect fit for me to use with a footstool. My wife needed a work table in her study, and we found a really solid table at our local furniture re-cycling centre costing just £15. The chap said 'Here you go - you can have this chair to go with it, for free.' The chair turned out to be absolutely perfect for me - result!

I have one very similar to this, perhaps a tad heavier than this one shown below (if link is allowed). It's sturdy and portable, not to mention extremely adjustable. It was worth it for me.

I've been looking at that, debating. I think I have to commit.

Currently, I use an adjustable office chair, but my desk needs a different height from playing guitar ... and I sometimes don't like the settings as a change. good grief .. what a whine. :-)

I agree with Erik that a (height adjustable) piano bench is the best choice for most of the classical guitar players. In guitar concerts you almost always find such a chair. I use a seat with an integrated inflatable Swiss ball, and this is the best solution for me but I learned that others don't really like it because it requires some fitness and body strength.

They don't carry the one I have anymore, it seems; mine has is essentially the same but has a "ladder" back and weighs a bit more. But the range of heights is excellent and the stool is very sturdy/stable even on the highest "rung". One of the things I like is that the seat is just small enough not to get in the way, but large enough for comfort. I was able to try a bunch of them at Johnson Music in person, so unless weight is a premium, or you are very tall, go for the heaviest you can find in these styles. I consider mine pretty portable at 13 lbs.

I like the Original Guitar Chair even though it's a little expensive. Great back support.

My favorite is a "Sound Seat". Great adjustability, good padding and a sublime back support.

+1, plus walking around while playing.

For some reason, walking and playing occasionally
would produce a great feeling of happiness.

I also nearly always stand while performing.

Sometimes I stand while practicing or playing at home, but usually I sit while practicing. I usually sit on a lightweight inexpensive fold up padded black rectangular piano bench / stool. I bought 3 of them about 25 years ago.

I just use an office chair: adjustable height, turns, rolls and the arm rests were easy to remove. ....
Best bang for buck (or Stg). Get an armless version in the first place. Only two things to watch out for: some of the cheapest ones don't have a very big height range - whether this matters depends on your height. Cheapies may have a very nasty soft foam which is going to wear out very quickly.

If you do in fact study guitar full time then remember that you will spend a lot of your time sitting on the chair si even a very expensive dedicated drummers throne or a special guitar chair is going to be cheap in the long run if you look at in hours of bum on the seat terms. Only your bed will get more use.

Definitely consider standing with a strap and if you sit get a guitar rest. Forget the foot stool. Foot stools guarantee significant back problems in later life.
