Please tell us about your local Guitar Societies

Post by David » Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:38 am

As the title of this thread suggests, can you tell us about a local guitar or lute society that you're a member of, or know about. We are developing a list of societies around the world for our members, the list can be found here.

The information that we're looking for is:
  • Name of Society
  • City, State, Country - particularly if it's not obvious from the name
  • Website*
  • Facebook page, if they have one.
  • Other contact details, especially if the Society does not have website
  • Something special that the society might do, e.g., run summer schools, has guitar orchestras, provide awards, etc.
* With giving website addresses the normal conventions apply, if the Society sells products via its website or is hosted by another entity that does, e.g., a music store, please do not give a direct link. Instead write the address in this form, guitarsociety.org.xx .

To those members who are not members of a guitar society, we encourage you to find out about the local group & consider joining. These societies are a great place to meet people with similar interests, they often arrange concerts & provide the opportunity for ensemble playing in a supportive environment. (While you're there you can also tell the other members about Delcamp & perhaps encourage the Society to create a link to us via their website.)

Canberra Classical Guitar Society (Australia)

The aims of the society are to promote, encourage and support music for the classical guitar (including classical, flamenco, contemporary, jazz) throughout the Canberra region through regular monthly meetings of society members, workshops, masterclasses and public concerts. The society also welcomes lute, Baroque guitar and oud players. However, you do not need to be a player to join.

Meetings are normally held on the second Sunday of each month at Wesley Uniting Church in Forrest, from 2:30-4:30 pm.

Allegro Guitar Society
Dallas, Texas
http://guitarsociety.org/

The Allegro Guitar Society is in 3 cities. Dallas, Fort Worth, and Las Vegas. The original Dallas group was at one time 15 or so years ago the biggest guitar society in the world but struggled and a couple of years ago went bankrupt. The new group seems to be doing ok but the Fort Worth chapter is selling out concerts while Dallas isn't filling a third of the seats, I don't know why.

They have outreach programs in schools and libraries to get kids interested. Many of the Dallas players get together once a month for an open play at a coffee shop.

There are a couple of local guitar societies in Haverhill and Cambridge listed in Classical Guitar Magazine, but I've never made contact with them.

Otherwise:

Essex:
Essex Guitar Orchestra - every third Sunday-ish
Contact: melvyn.willin#tiscali.co.uk (replace # with @ to email)

Cambridgeshire:
Cambridge Guitar Orchestra - rehearsal dates on website
Contact: http://www.cgo.org.uk

Essex are slightly more anarchic, Cambridge being a bit serious (which is probably why Essex's Musical Director only has to open his mouth to speak and everybody shuts up to listen). Essex will take players at almost any level so long as they have a good knowledge of chords. Cambridge like players to be Grade 5 or above. With Essex, I've played to audiences up to 200. With Cambridge, the biggest audience I've played to is about 80. Cambridge play out more, though, which is enjoyable.

Don't forget to talk to Derek Hasted about the mighty HaGO, John Mills about Southampton, or Terry Woodgate about West Sussex - all highly respected groups.

Connecticut Guitar Societies.

The society offers personal services to connect anyone seeking music instruction, concert level performers, or live music for planned events with professional guitar teachers and performers. It also presents Master Classes and workshops for players at all levels, frequently in collaboration with local educational institutions. The Society publishes a Newsletter featuring articles on the guitar and the study of the instrument; there is also a section where members may advertise classical guitars and accessories. The Society hosts a Guitar Ensemble where members of all playing skills gain performance experience. The Society produces a CD record performed by its professional members.

I am considering forming a local guitar society in Mammoth Lakes CA. I'm also considering joining the towns Public Arts Commission and be a spokesman for local musicians issues. I hope to divert their attention from issues like what color to paint the buses and how many fish sculptures do we really need to how can we save the trees in the glade where they put on concerts for 10,000 people. I advocate that the town or a private partnership develop an amphitheater which will be a proper venue for the many music festivals we have each summer. The Guitar Society would serve as a good lobbying tool for leveraging the local politics and perhaps even provide the partners for the proposed amphitheater. My benefactor (Shields at The Side Door Cafe) would probably get pretty excited about this, provide the venue for our Guitar Society Meetings and bring more of the high end, big money people to the partnership. Once a venue is in place the Guitar Society can book many shows and festivals building a reputation by bringing the worlds best guitarists to town. Unfortunately the town council suffers from a bad case of "Mammoth Culture" which prevents them from making well informed public arts decisions. I don't know if I really have the means to launch a program like this but maybe if I am patient I may ultimately get to make a living performing in and promoting Guitar Society events.
