Post by alex1029 » Wed Jul 26, 2017 9:43 pm

Hey guys here is a video I made from my concert Saturday! It was really fun and rewarding to play this type of music with the mandolin player!

Calace was one of the main "classical mandolin" composers, I think. Wikipedia has some information about him. Thanks for the video, Alex!

Yea! I actually never heard of him until the mandolin player I was playing with recommended it! Its SUPER Italian sounding and always a crowd pleaser. Its really hard to find even a good score of his music. And it seems the mandolin is equal to the guitar in that the music is passed down form generation to generation!

I have a couple of friends that play mandolins built by Calace - we've performed an awful lot of his music almost all of which is available free from:

http://www.federmandolino.it/new/calace ... cores.html

However, the guitar parts are generally rather dull and formulaic - you will want to choose carefully from the selection on offer ... still, there is plenty there. The "Tarantella" generally goes down well being set in a popular idiom and fairly screaming Italy at the audience.

His solo works for "liuto" and for the guitar are also to be found there though the latter are again rather formulaic and not very finely crafted. He was more of a mandolinist than guitarist.

Well done. I'm sure I've played this serenata in the mandolin orchestra version, I've forgotten what it sounded like :P. Have you looked at https://www.trekel.de/ or other modern mandolin publishers for Calace scores? That cat is nearly having an accident around 0:38 by the way :P
