Bizet, Georges - Habanera from Carmen - Video

Postby Heike Matthiesen » Sun Jan 11, 2015 1:43 pm

Dear friends,
here a new video of mine playing the Habanera on a Altamira N500. The transcription is by Francis Kleynjans in a book no more available, so I hope it is okay with copyright to post it.
I love to play this piece as encore in Spanish programs, beautiful version!

Dear Heike

Beautiful playing! I really like this arrangement, especially after 1 minute it becomes more than just a "Carmen transcription". And the use of harmonics are beautiful!
Best regards,
Malan

Heike,
Wow! You made that factory guitar sound like a luthier guitar of great expectations!
Did you ever try the Edgar Monch guitar they have?

Hi @Kent , I played already a couple of Mönch guitars in the past, always liked them but never bought one....there were sooooo many interesting instruments to try, also some makers new for me.
I had heard last year in the guitar testing at the Darmstädter Gitarrentage a "cheap" Altamira, there were highclass instruments and the Altamira in blind test and it was quite a challenge to find out which one it was, it first got clear when Tilman Hoppstock played Bach, but in all other repertory the Altamira did an amazing job, so I knew it would be easy to make it sound nice!

Not only does Heike connect with the music; she also luxuriates in that drop-D tuning - as one should!

I've just looked at some of her other vids, and she certainly knows how to bring out the charm in a piece. Her Mozart 'Andante' is outstanding also, creating an almost Segovian feel.

Good, good guitarist.

Absolutely lovely! I like playing El Arreglito by Yradier from which Bizet stole the tune. When Yradier complained, Bizet explained that he thought it was a traditional Spanish tune.

According to Heike at German CG forum, the arrangement can be found here:
Francis Kleynjans, 10 thème celebres, published by Lemoine.

However, I tried to buy one, but it seems it's not printed anymore.
Maybe you are luckier than me and can find a used one now.
Good luck.

This is very cool! I think it's kind of an iconic piece that nearly anyone will recognize even if not knowing that it's from Carmen.
I wonder if there is also a good arrangement of the Toreador Song?
