How do you tell a factory from a hand-made?

Post by DanManGuitar » Sun Mar 05, 2017 11:27 pm

Some you may know that I'm looking for a guitar in the $2000 and under range, and I want to know the difference between factory and hand-made guitars, and the difference between them. Thanks!

Hi Dan,

May I suggest that you type in the words "factory or luthier" in the search box for this forum? You will get a vast array of answers to your question, as well as some insight into the fact that this can be a rather contentious issue (are you familiar with the term "can of worms"?).

Good luck!

I personally wouldn't mind if a team of monkey's made my guitar, as long as I am happy with the playability and sound.

A bit off topic, but can you clarify how to make a search? If I type "factory or luthier" into the search box, the search ignores "or" and shows zero results? Actually I have not ever been able to use the search function successfully on this site...no results every time, no matter how I try to adjust the search terms.

You need to use the Google Search box near the top of the page. The internal search function does not, er, function.

I think you are referring to Large Factory and One Man respectively.

Between them you have Small Workshop and Medium Workshop :)

Dan,
Out of curiosity (since I am currently looking as well), what guitars have you looked at so far?

If I am shopping for a guitar now, I am going after the hand-made guitars by well known makers. In this way, I can avoid buying a factory guitar.
