Your preference piece(s) to play when trying out a guitar

Post by quixilver » Tue Jun 06, 2017 6:00 am

Not sure if this question was asked before but I wonder of which piece(s) do you prefer or must you play when testing out or observing a guitar, and what sort of attribute or aspect do you notice and focus on when you play that piece?

There is no judgement on any of the answer, I am just trying to build a reference. Hence, feel free to share your thoughts!

Thanks :)

1. Villa-Lobos Estude No.1: extremely responsive? well balanced? ......
2. Barrios Forest Dream: musical expressive? ......

Almost test everywhere......

I just play as much as I can remember at the time, but most likely some of these: (As you probably can tell I'm not a particular fast playing guy ;))

Agustin Barrios - Julia Florida
Andrew York - Squares Suspended
Carlo Domeniconi - Rose in a Garden
Don McLean - Vincent
Federico Moreno Torroba - Torija
Francisco Tárrega - Adelita
Georg Friedrich Händel - Ombra Mai Fu
J.S Bach - Arioso BWV 156
J.S Bach - Sarabande in B minor
Leo Brouwer - Un Dia de Noviembre
Marguerite Monnot - Hymne à l'amour
Miguel Llobet - Canco De Lladre
Miguel Llobet - El Mestre
Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
Scott Tennant - Wild Mountain Thyme
Turlough O`Carolan - Si Bheag Si Mhor

All the best from Sweden

I noiced at a video of Tariq Harb, he mentioned he tests every new guitar playing the Asturias. I can imagine why as this piece "has it all" regarding dynamics, arpegios, notes at many parts of the fretboard etc..

Villa-Lobos Estude No.1 --> Yes, looks very good idea to check the separation of the voices..

Beside Villa Lobos Estude No.1 and Forest Dream, I also will try others such as Barrios The Last Tremolo...Tarrega' s pieces, Carcassi's pieces...

I use to play some Tarrega pieces and preludes when trying out an unknown guitar as they are not so long and usually go over the whole fretboard from the deep basses to the highest register. Bach is also a great source for checking the balance, clear separation of notes etc. BWV 999 for example.

A great list Jon, some of my favourite music. I just can't commit more than about five to memory at any one time. Brain is getting old.

Judging from most of the guitar stores I visit, I'd say it's "Stairway to Heaven."

Romance de Amour...full piece, repeated. Where I live, one does not expect to spend too much time in a store unless one is buying some of the most expensive stuff there.

I prefer playing (phrases of) pieces that need a lot of 'work' to sound well on my current guitar.
That helps me assess whether a new guitar has something to offer or not.

Some Tarrega, Lagrima, Adelita, some Villa-Lobos, Prelude no.1, no.3, Gnossienne no.1 andGymnopedie no.1 by Erik Satie, Birds flew over the spire, un dia de noviembre. Nothing too difficult. Stuff I know well so I can concentrate on the sound of the guitar.
