How/where to order and purchase Mathias Dammann guitar

Post by mohhzi » Thu Jun 08, 2017 7:32 am

Dear friends,

I would like to purchase 1990 Mathias Damman guitar (picture attached) similar to David Russel's guitar. Does anyone have an idea how to knowbthe price and where to order and buy it? (Price of both new and old ones)

Best,
Mo

If you need to ask the price, you can't afford one.

The only internet published price I have seen for a new Dammann was US $35,000 and the seller claimed that he was the cheapest in the US. I have never seen a price for a used one but at a dealer I would imagine something between $20k and $35K. (Just guesses) From what I have read his waiting list is 10 years and likely closed in any case.

Dammann's postal address and phone number is on this page: http://www.focus-gitarre.de/firmen/bran ... topmenu=11 (8th entry on the list). He apparently doesn't have a website but he doesn't need one. If you write to him at that address maybe he can tell you the names of his dealers who are getting guitars in the next year or two. I think that is the best chance of locating a new one in a reasonable period of time.

Trilogy guitars in your screenshot might know if one was for sale anywhere in the US. Siccas guitar dealer in Germany might also have information as they are well connected. There are also some dealers in she UK who might have some information.

The is a French dealer who suggests that the German maker Reza Safavian who they represent has a fairly similar sound to Dammann. Here is an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riZH9fnA54I I don't know if the sample tells anything very much. It will clearly be much cheaper than a Dammann and with the advantage that is is immediately available.

I have no personal knowledge of any of the makers so this is just internet research.

...or you could buy a guitar from Dennis Tolz (he's an ex-student of mine), who has just sold a guitar to David Russel. Dennis makes very good quality double-top guitars, and will be much cheaper and easier to buy than a Dammann.

I have a friend who is expecting his new Dammann soon and he told me that he would sell his old one (anno. 2005/2006). His asking price will be somewhere around 25k USD.

You can PM me if you feel interested and we can take it from there.

A couple years ago, I inquired about a Damman from an online dealer. His (edited) reply was:
The 2012 cedar Dammann recently sold, sorry, the price was $59,500.
Although I once went for 5 years without a single Dammann to sell you contacted me at a good time I have 3 options for you.
  • A like new 1998 cedar nomex Dammann (660mm scale), superb and very well priced, $39,500
  • A like new 2010 SPRUCE ( my personal favorite over cedar) nomex Dammann $59,500
  • A brand new 2015 SPRUCE Version 3.0 non nomex Dammann $68,500

Mind-boggling. I wonder how much of this is just because a certain luthier becomes associated with a big-name player. Branding and marketing. Pretty soon it's going to get into Thoroughbred race horse territory.

I like the tone of the Reza, but also the music being played. What's this piece called?

Nowhere near record horse prices. 7 figure numbers are not unfrequent in the horse business. 8 figure numbers have occurred as far as I know.
