A custom case per guitar can cost thousands...I think it's a matter of trusting instinct. I've packed some delicate items and as far as packaging, I was not concerned with how crude the packaging looked but more if the contents would take the damage.

So if you got it in one piece, that's great. Don't sweat the lack of case. Most guitars that come with high end cases are 10k and up...

The standard metro case is a very good case. I've dropped it on a solid concrete floor and the paint chipped out, but the fiberglass was fully intact.

It all depends, if you aren't traveling then you really don't need an 800-1000$ case...

Tell the dealer you are returning the guitar and crappy case for a full refund plus shipping unless he can make it right. Everything is negotiable. A "reputable dealer" will make an attempt to make the customer happy. If you're willing to give a little, and figure out your walk away amount, maybe you can get a decent case at his cost so he won't lose his commission and reputation in the tiny and close knit CG community, and make the deal a win win.
All this time I thought I was making music; it was making me.

This is my FE-17 replica in the Hiscox GCL-S Classical Small Pro 2 case. I wrote to Hiscox and they sent me extra cushions very graciously to pad out the case for a snug fit.

Love it absolutely, Doan. Thank you for the recommendation.
