Opinions on guitar sound?

Post by madrilla » Sat Sep 09, 2017 9:48 pm

How would you rate the guitar based on this sample of Bach Chaconne:

Any perceptions, good or bad are welcome, thanks.

Can't judge a guitar based on recording... well, I can't. So much has to do with the player, the recording equipment, the sound editing, the room...now if I could hear it live...lol!

Recordings can be deceiving, but as far as I can tell this one sounds like a Hauser style instrument. What do you know about the guitar?

Sounds like a 2014 Hermann Hauser III copy

It is based on a Torres template of Vicente Arias and is 640mm in scale length.

Does it sound like Torres style as well?

It doesn't particularly appeal to me but I find it hard to describe why.

I didn't care for it. An electric guitarist might describe it as a little "muddy".

Hard to judge a guitar based on one sound clip, there are too many variables. In the hands of a different player or different recording equipment or different strings, etc. this guitar might sound very different. Based solely on this clip, I thought it sounded nasally and metallic, not all that pleasant. Under different circumstances, it might sound much better.

I think the recording (or possibly the guitar, hard to tell) lacks the important midrange, that otherwise makes the guitar sound "woody" or "earthy" - Not a super bad recording tough, I've heard worse.

Difficult to say because there is added some kind of artificial reverb + something else (poorly placed mics or some effect) that gives distorsion to the sound which is not beneficial to the classical guitar sound (to put it mildly).

Hard to say, because the recording sounds as if it was fairly edited by EQ. Maybe it's simply caused by the speakers/headphones that were used for the mix (?)
I'd say the midrange and lo-mids are suppressed way to much (300 Hz - 800 Hz), hi-mids at 2 kHz and up are increased. It sounds to me as if the microphone sound equalization (usu. a 400-600 Hz peak) was exaggerated to produce a kind of HiFi-sound.
If the guitar would REALLY sound like this, I'd never buy it, because missing midrange means missing assertiveness. Maybe it's a nice sound for a "Romantic Guitar for your fireplace"-CD or whatever, but too gentle for a live performance. Sorry, didn't want to nag or tackle, but that's what I think, when listening to it.
Solution is very easy: Less reduction of midrange frequencies would improve the sound a lot! And maybe you could change speakers/headphones. Ever tried AKG K271 headphones? Not expensive, but very high-definition neutral sound, very comfortable and they're closed.

Yes I think it has some of the Torres qualities. In my experience, Torres style instruments have a certain snap and clarity in the trebles while being complex and colorful. I'm surprised with all of the negative comments. In my honest opinion I think it sounds nice, but to each their own.

I almost wonder if the comments would be different if you had first told us it was an actual Torres, Fleta, Romanillos, Hauser, etc. :D.

It wouldn't matter to me what the name was and still doesn't. My 2 favorite cg's are my Guistina and my $100.00 C3F. I can't say if it's the cg, the mics or the speakers on my laptop, etc.. It could be none or all.
If, you told me this cg was for sale, I'd pass.
I also play an electric arch top. This type of sound would prompt me to adjust my amp.
It's the differences of opinion that give us something to talk about.

The sound doesn't seem to be that popular but that's what I wanted to find out. Perhaps the guitar could have been recorded further away or different position. I've asked a question about the EQ but I'm not confident of getting an answer as the recording was done a long time ago. I personally think the sound is defined and crisp in all registers, good bass considering the small size and clear in the treble as you say. The sustain seems quite decent too but that could just be reverb.

Not sure but that sounds like a good idea for a shootout / review between different copies.
