Kenny Hill Estudio or Player?

Post by llebron » Thu Oct 26, 2017 12:07 pm

I'm looking at buying a smaller scale guitar. At the moment I am looking at the Kenny Hill Estudio and Player series. The Player, of course, is about $800 dollars more. I do not have the opportunity to try them out.

If anyone has compared them can they kindly give me their opinion on the them. Is the Player worth the extra expense?

I have an Estudio, and I really like it. It stays at my office, and I play it during the day if I get a chance. I haven't tried a Player, but I would imagine that, since they are solid bodied, rather than laminated back and sides, they would sound slightly better.
Right now, Rick Savage has an excellent deal on Estudio's, until Oct. 31. ....$150 off.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been emailing Rick with questions and he has been very good with his replies. The Players also have a discount at the moment. Hard choice.

I'd say that, if you can afford it, go with the Player. Guitars, to me, are like tools.....the better quality is usually worth the extra price.

I have been listening to Rick's comparison of the 615 spruce and the cedar. I hate to say this but I cannot tell a huge difference between them. All the guitars I already own are cedar so I will probably go with that. Any suggestions?

I'd go for the Cordoba C10 parlor if you want a short scale. It is just as good as the player but for less money. I understand that it is Kenny Hill who pretty much designed the Cordoba guitars and set up their shop. I have played the estudio, player and c10 parlor. My favorite until now is a Spruce c10 parlor

I've owned both the Player and Estudio KH New World guitars. I currently have two Players that are fantastic - one 650 spruce and a 650 cedar w/elevated fingerboard...unbelievably great instruments for under $2K. The Estudio I owned for about a year - it was okay, but in that price range I'd opt for a Cordoba C9, another remarkable solid wood guitar. Overall I do prefer the Kenny Hill neck profile over the Cordoba - the depth of the neck is a bit fatter, which I prefer.

I highly, highly recommend the Kenny Hill Player series.

I've looked at the Cordoba C9/C10 parlors. But I am looking to buy a 615mm and the Cordoba's are 630mm.

Which do you prefer, if any, the spruce or the cedar?
I listened to Rick Savage's recordings of both and could not hear a huge difference.

The Spruce Player is from 2015 and it's one of those rare, "something special" instruments - very easy to play, nice and precise, great sustain and balance. The Cedar is a new 2017 and I'm going to adjust the action down a bit. Very strong on bass strings with great sustain, but not as balanced with the trebles as the Spruce. I think once I get the set-up adjusted, it will be just fine. Too early to make a judgement on the Cedar. In general, I tend to prefer cedar guitars, so that says a lot for the Spruce.

Rich Savage, not Rick.

Just remember, he's rich, not poor.

After talking to a friend and my teacher I have ordered the Spruce. Rich was very helpful with the questions I asked him.

I didn't see this until today. I have a 615 mm spruce Player that I'm very happy with. I went back and forth about spruce vs cedar too. My teacher and my brother (a bass player) liked the sound of spruce better in the recordings so that's what I went with. It sounds great, is easy to play and looks lovely. You will enjoy it.

I just heard your recording of Sepia with this guitar. It sounds great. Nice playing BTW.

Thanks for the info. I am getting the spruce model today.

You mean he wasn't talking about the bass player for Def Leppard?🤔
