A - B Comparison

Post by el_guitarrero » Sun Nov 12, 2017 11:55 am

Hello Forum Members,

Would you help me out?

I am comparing 2 Factory Guitars in the sub 1500€ Range, one is spruce, the other one a cedar top.

Which one do you prefer A or B ?

https://soundcloud.com/use1414/comparison-a-b

Thank you !

:D

I am assuming that guitar A is the first one played in each of the four sound samples and B is therefore the second? If so, I think I prefer B but to be honest I didn't really hear much of a difference between them. I was, however, very impressed both by your playing and also by the quality of the sound recording.

Out of curiosity, what is the name of the first piece that was played (the one before the Milonga?). That was a really lovely piece.

I shouldn't because I'm usually wrong on these things, this is where I show my butt...I'm assuming B is spruce? I think I like B more on a couple of the examples anyway. I did similar, had Cordobas C10s Spruce and Cedar here at the same time for a few weeks. I ended up keeping the Cedar one, it sounded better to me but the Spruce one just might not have been a good example of one.

Anyway...nice comparison & playing examples you posted, thanks.

I think I like A the best, at least when listen through my laptop speakers (MacBook Pro 2017) - It had better midrange and clarity, suitable for a certain types of music of course. However A had better "attack" if that is something you are into. I liked the tremolo better on B I think. Guitar B also seems to be more forgiving and maybe you found this guitar to be a little easier to play?

Kind regards
/Jon

I'm also listening on laptop speakers but had a strong preference for A.

I bookmarked your link! Thanks for sharing!

I used earphone to listen. I prefer B guitar. A to me is a little metallic good to listen but fatigue after a little while. But A seem a little more definition on some passage. B overall sweet and classic which I prefer how classical guitar sound. Are you going to make album? My limited experience told me player and who listen to the player hear different sound.

They both sound almost identical to me.
I found the A guitar's treble a tad too "digital" to my ears. As for the B guitar, I was expecting a warmer tone on the bass notes during tremolo but could not tell the difference relative to the A guitar, almost identical??

I prefer the B guitar simply due to the too bright treble of the A guitar!

I preferred B, although up until the last piece there was not much difference. In the last piece B seemed a little darker, more appealing to the bass.

I liked B as well. A sounded a bit too metallic to me, B sounded fuller with more depth.

Nice playing.

The treble on sample A sounded a bit 'processed' to my ears - I guess that's what others are calling metallic. So I prefer B.

THANK YOU !!!

For taking the time and for the nice words.
The guitars played are a A) Juan Hernandez Concierto Spruce B)Paco Castillo PC-205 Cedar
Strings: DÁddario EJ45
Recorder: Sony PCM M10 and 2x Naiant X-R Mics (Omni)in Armlength distance in 60cm apart (AB -Setup)
Small Room, Diffusors / Absorbers inside.

If anyone interested, I have added the unprocessed fileshttps://soundcloud.com/use1414/a-b-comp ... nprocessed

I like both guitars, but B) is a little easier on the hands, as rinneby noticed....it has a slightly "beefier" neck.

Thanks, just curious - what processing was added in the first post?

Processing done in the first post was

1. Low Frequency lowered below 80hz and reduced above 6khz
2. Reverb added (Exponential Audio: Phoenix Verb, Setting "Live recording-> Gallery Dark", about 18% added)

As to the first piece:

Yes, since I recorded it into one file, and this was processed. Completely equal settings.
