Need help pricing a guitar to sell

Post by montana » Thu Nov 23, 2017 4:08 am

I ve got a 1983 yamaha GC7A ....spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides. Several dings and scratches otherwise in good condition . I bought it new and I believe I paid about 7 hundred . Can anyone give me an amount I should be asking for? I gave my number to a person who is enrolling in a college performance program, and I don't have a clue what to ask.

There’s one on Fleabay right now from a seller in Japan for about 800 dollars, and it’s lookin’ kinda beat. Yours is nearly 35 years old. I’d say clean it up real nice and you could probably, and if it photographs well you could probably Fleabay it for $500.

Currently in a similar situation, re: pricing reference and what's appropriate to ask for a guitar (near mint Picado Model 49 from 2004, incl. Travelite case w/humidity gauge, Dampit, strap for case, etc).

I've seen a few on e - b a y as well as Reverb, but I've also found those sites, in general, to fluctuate wildly at times on asking prices (especially when it comes to musical instruments).

In my case, I'd be using what I get from the Picado towards a new guitar that I'm hoping to purchase relatively soon, so while I wouldn't want to price the guitar for much less than it's current value, I'm also willing to sell as a decent 'deal', so to speak, to expedite the process.

Anyway, any guidance on information about appraising these instruments, even the 2004 Picado 49 in particular, would be extremely helpful!

As a rough rule of thumb most medium range guitars of this vintage seem to sell for around 50% +/- of current new price for same or comparable guitar.

There’s a new one in GB for £895 ($1200) and another in the US for $1400. Two used guitars of similar vintage are advertised for £580 ($770) and $700.

As you are in the US and yours in in very good condition, maybe advertise for $775 to $800 (plus a bit if on the bay?) and be prepared to settle for around $700-750?

Hi Pat,

Thanks for the thorough response. Really do appreciate the information. I've been doing some surfing around on the forums here, which has also been extremely helpful in understanding the process.

Thanks again!
John
