Looking for a Jarana

Post by Uriel Garcia » Thu Aug 03, 2017 2:07 am

I am not 100% sure if that is the name but, I am looking for options as to where to buy one or if anybody makes them on this forum? I have purchased two guitars from these forums and would love to acquire one of these instruments.

Hi Uriel

Are you looking for a Harana guitar made from the Phillipines?

I wanted to see if anyone knew of an American dealer or luthier who can make one.

Try Berkeley Musical Instrument Exchange, call them up. They usually have one or two and if not can get one for you.
I know the Jarana and know exactly what you are looking for, I've repaired a few for a Mexican folklorico group.

If you are looking for a small instrument that has 8-strings in 5-courses (in a 1-2-2-2-1 arrangement) then that's a jarana or a jarana jarocha. David Wax plays one and my luthier in Boston has done some work on his. Unfortunately, I don't know where David got his. You might have a better shot getting one from south of the border or in southern California. Jorge Mijangos makes some as does Ali Medrano (not sure about spelling). You might also give Candelas Guitars a look. I think they are in LA.

Cheers,

Paul

Uriel, try House of Musical Traditions near DC's Takoma Park Metro stop. Dare you to leave empty handed!
Or perhaps check Elderly Instruments' online listings?
