Building of my 8 string Stauffer guitar

Post by Tomzooki » Mon Aug 28, 2017 7:04 pm

I ordered a copy of 8 string Stauffer guitar from Miodrag Zerdoner, who is also a very fine guitarist. I asked him to send me pictures of the making. Here are the sides:

Awesome! That looks like a nice cut of birdseye, it's going to look great with a finish on it.
I love these kinds of guitars, so I can't wait to see the result.

Awesome, how long do you expect the build to take?
I'd love to hear it when it's done!

I did a search on Miodrag, looks like he's built some of these before but I don't see any videos or sound clips of them in action.

Looking good, that's coming together pretty quickly!
Miodrag recently posted a video on Facebook where he was playing an 8-string Stauffer model that he built. It sounds fantastic so it really looks like you're getting a great guitar for a modest price!

Oh yes!! I saw that video, and it made it just harder to wait!! Miodrag is a fantastic guitarist, so he can show the potential of a guitar. On the video we can see that both the guitarist and the guitar are great 8)

Very nice looking build. I would invest in the best grade of platina shellac for this. Maybe it's just my personal preference, but I think that the yellowing that comes with typical grades of amber shellac is less flattering to high grades of maple than it is to darker woods. Maple looks great, IMO, with the clearest finish possible.

I think many will disagree, including myself. It can all look a bit stark with the clearest shellac. Personally I prefer it to be an amber colour and of course pretty much all violins are finished with pretty strong colour. In any case clear shellac won't stop the wood from oxidising, over time it will yellow anyway and there's nothing one can do to stop it.

You better not even think about carbon strings on that :)

Go gut.
