romanillos torres soundboard aggregate

Post by geoff-bristol » Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:36 pm

In the Romanillos book on torres he cites a 'soundboard aggregate' in the dimensions ? How is this arrived at - I don't have the book, just grab some info on what pages are previewed in google books !
Is it s relationship of soundhole size of some sort ?

Hi Geoff.
In page 293 he explains.
Soundboard aggregates in cm2 = the size of the plantilla = the soundboard area.
BL X (UB+WW+LB) X 0,96
3
Bodylength multiplied with upperbout + waist + lowerbout divided with 3 and then multiplied with 0,96.
He worked out this equation with John Mack and it should give the soundboard area within margin error of 1,6%.
As you see: no soundhole mentioned.
So it is the entire soundboard area including soundhole area
and the area covered by the fretboard.
Hope this helps.

Thanks
Interesting - one could set up a ratio of soundhole area to soundboard area with that ? I wondered - as torres soundholes seem to vary in size - maybe just a makers whim. It would seem soundhole size makes some appreciable differences !

Another thing learned today - just try to learn more each day than I forget !

Geoff there is a thread on the Torres sizes called: Torres Size - Romanillos - sorry I don't know how to link to it.

His soundholes were actually fairly consistent at 83 to 84 mm.

The GAL article mentioned is very informative and has all the data from the Romaillos book tabulated in various ways.

Thanks Simonm -
will take a look - and another look at his soundhole sizes !
I have just drawn up a plantilla based on the SE114 - and its hole is 83 - so had to rework the rosette I had planned ! I relalised after the first few guitars its not a great idea to make the hole to suit your hand size for easy access - albeit useful !
