I should have my name moved from the Professional category to the Amateur category, as I have not, yet, begun to sell instruments. Waddy Thomson

How will we distinguish the professionals from the amateurs?

Professional luthiers build guitars for money. Amateur luthiers build guitars as a hobby and not as their main source of income. The word amateur comes from 'amato' (love). It is certainly not a (dis)qualification! The amateur luthiers can use their forum name, the professionals are obliged to be known on this forum by their real name.

Professional luthiers make a living by building guitars for money.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

How will we distinguish them on the forum? Will there be a different color for their login names?

Yes. Look at the bottom of the front index page and you'll see the colours of the various groups: Admins, Mods, Luthiers, Amateur Luthiers etc.

It's a great idea to identify luthiers with a group color, however, I've seen an instance of a professional luthier that still shows up as blue. It's also worth noting that the darker and lighter shades of violet are hard to distinguish unless they're side-by-side.

Well I’m in a bit of a quandary now. I don’t know where I fit in to these luthier lists. I build guitars, sell a few but don’t rely on it to survive. Does this make me an amateur? (perhaps the professional luthiers are those eating sawdust) However I do earn part of my living setting up and repairing guitars for a wholesale musical instrument distributor. Does this make me a professional?
My forum name of “Mearnscraft” is the name I put in my own instruments i.e. Mearnscraft Guitars however I also sign them with my own name which is Euan Hannah.
Anyway I enjoy participating in the forum, listed or unlisted, professional or amateur. It is a great resource to players and luthiers alike.

This has been the case with me my entire life and is a fit eulogy for me.
I would like to up for this amateur luthier's forum also since I love guitars and have been building on and off, for money or for fun most of my life. I'm no pro but I HAVE had my moments.

I'm a professional luthier and I still come up as "blue" and I'm not the only one.
I'll have to figure out how to change it to purple....

Oops, I misunderstood. I'm definitely in the amateur category, not the professional one. Will you please make the necessary change?
Thanks,
Robert
