Hi Simon

are you still working on your Hauser with Tobias on Schloss Ottenschlag? Please give us an update if you have the chance to get connected with your forum.

I am doing a Cypress Romanillos style. :-) Might do a Hauser the next time round. I will try to put up a few pictures before long.

Hello simonm,

Wie geht's? Am looking forward to pictures.

What time do you start work in the morning?

Do you have your main meal at mid day? Do you eat with the other members of the course and talk things over?

What time do you quit for the day.

Will your guitars be finished or in the white?

A few pictures from the beginning of the course.

Visitor - Fanz Helfersdorfer of the Danube guitar duo playing a genuine Romanillos. Very nice instrument. First time I have heard one live.

Extremely happy with the course. As for the questions about food and schedule. Excellent catering. We start in the workshop around 9am. And the record so far is someone working on their guitar at 2.30 a.m. - not me.

Simon,

Great pictures, it looks so serene outside the building. Keep us updated on how your progress goes where you're able.

Best,

I spy a Tormek wheel sharpener...heheheh

Congrats on Cypress, it smells good doesn't it? I think you will like the sound a lot. Spruce and Cypress...heavenly...

I think it's smart you opted for Cypress because Indian Rosewood or even Brazilian, is something you would expect in the premier makers. You'd always have to live with the stigma of comparing your instrument to those greater experienced builders.

With Cypress you may allow yourself to appreciate that "tonewood" is not an absolute....

hello simonm,

I'm curious as to the as to the voicing if the instruments that you are making. Is there a discussion or demonstration of how Tobias does it?

I saw that Santos plan in a recent American Lutherie magazine. Would love to know your opinion of the sound comparisons between guitars, when you get them all strung up.

Was just perusing the Big Red Book of American Lutherie Vol. 1. In it was an article by Jeff Elliott about the Hauser tradition. Have you seen this?

Someone asked about food.

The starters:

The Main course.
food2.jpg
Didn't photograph the dessert - an Austrian pancake filled with vanilla ice-cream and served with a chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

We didn't starve. A suggestion for next year was to weigh everyone before and after the class…..

And now for something completely different:

Final guitar report.
One guitar with strings on it. Four with bridges and fretboards on but not fretted. Two without bridges but one of these included making a rosette during the course and the other was a guy who was here for only one week.

Do me a favor and drink a nice fresh Kolsch beer while you are there...Kolsch although light in body and flavor, is a delightful unappreciated underdog of the craft beer world.

But let's not divert from the forum topic...Where is your guitar? Did you shave those braces yet? How about the Rosette? Did you build it yourself...

Sorry not possible. A tiny village in Austria is not the place to look for a German beer. Check the geography. :-)

The "masterpiece" - not quite finished:

Summary of the experience: fantastic. Learned a lot.

Would I recommend the class?

The only reason I would not recommend it, is because I (selfishly  ) want to make sure that there is a place available for me on next year's course which is taking place again in the first two weeks of August.** All participants in this class were German speaking. Previous classes have include English speakers so that is not an issue.

I hope to be able to go again next year, holiday schedule permitting. If it works out I will try to add a few days onto it for some tourism. It is a lovely time of the year in that area. Despite being at 800m it is a country side with low hills. The area specialises in poppy seeds which turn up in lots of food items. Spring time when poppy fields are blooming would also be a nice time to visit.

** Next years dates. 30th (Sun)/31st(Mon) July to 13th (Sun) August.

Lovely looking place! Now I wish I could go on the course and I already know what what I am doing. Perhaps there could be like a luthier workshop swap where we could trade places a build or something haha.

Haha...You won't get any Kölsch beer in Austria, not even in Germany. Actually people in Düsseldorf will kick you out of the town if you order a Kölsch there. It's a very limited regional speciality.

Simon, congrats to your new guitar. Your report is quite enthusiastic. Must be a unique experience, such a course with Tobias. Hope to play your new spruce/cypress Romanillos asap.
