Barrios Mangoré, Agustín - Danza Paraguaya - Video

Post by glassynails » Tue Nov 21, 2017 10:53 pm

I transcribed this from Barrios' live recording by slowing it down in vlc. He uses open strings for the final eighth note of most bars in the first section I believe to facilitate a high tempo, which of course due to unfamiliarity with the arrangement, I'm not anywhere near here. It's slow, but I believe it's over 90% the arrangement that Barrios recorded.

That seems like a lot of work to transcribe that from a live recording. You think it's different than, for example, this?

Yes, it's very different from that. Barrios uses open notes for a lot of the 3+ beats in the first section when switching positions. All the published arrangements are different from what Barrios played on his recording in every section of the piece. I slowed it down and painstakingly worked out every note like I do most pieces that I work on.

Well then I believe congratulations are in order. Well done. Sounds like a nice piece played slower, too.

I think this is quite an accomplishment, glassy. Your playing has grown immensely over the years I have been on this forum. To transcribe this rather difficult piece from a less than optimal old recording of Barrios himself is really impressive. Kudos.

Lovely! Congratulations. Great work. I listened to some other versions for a direct comparison. I also agree that the slower pace is very nice too.

It would be interesting to know what speed Barrios would have played it at live. There is always a thought that in some old recordings the speeds are partly to fit the recording medium so a piece that was relatively long for the medium had to be played a little faster to make it fit. I have no idea if this is applicable to Barrios's recordings.

Thanks.

Nice work! Made it worth while to go the extra mile and transcribe by ear to pick up those differences. I do that with a lot of music -- trust but verify when it comes to the notation, often times it's so worth it and a great learning experience!
