D02 Classical guitar lesson 06

Post by Jean-François Delcamp » Mon Feb 01, 2016 5:57 pm

Hello everyone,
Please start by downloading the latest version of volume D02.
If you are new to the course, please read this message to familiarize yourself with the conditions for participating in the lessons. You should also read the first message in lesson 1, where you will find advice on how to make the most of your study time and on the methods of practising that I recommend.

First we will study some technical exercises from volume D02.
- page 78 Jean-François DELCAMP (1956) LIAISONS - LEGATURE - SLURS – LIGADOS
Ascending slurs are produced by striking (hammering down on) the string with a left hand finger. The faster and more decisive this movement is, the more volume is obtained. Practise particularly on the nylon (unwound) strings, as these are the most difficult to get a clear sound from.
Descending slurs are produced by pulling the string with a left hand finger (and letting it snap off the fingertip). The more parallel this movement is to the plane of the fingerboard (i.e. towards the adjacent string where there is one), the more volume is obtained. Practise particularly on the nylon (unwound) strings, as these are the most difficult to get a clear sound from.

Next, we will be working on 3 pieces with a phrase structure of 4 bars. Phrase structure is the division of the larger musical phrase into parts of equal length, with the most common division being into sections of 4 bars. This division is linked not only to walking, but also to dance, poetry and singing.
- page 30 Thoinot ARBEAU (1519-1595) PAVANE
- page 33 Ferdinand CARULLI (1770-1841) ANDANTINO
- page 48 Matteo CARCASSI (1792-1853) SAUTEUSE opus 59

I ask you first to work on all these exercises and tunes for a week and then to upload your recordings of:
- page 78 number 19, Jean-François DELCAMP (1956) LIAISONS - LEGATURE - SLURS – LIGADOS
- page 33 Ferdinand CARULLI (1770-1841) ANDANTINO
- page 48 Matteo CARCASSI (1792-1853) SAUTEUSE opus 59
I ask every one of the students to take part in at least one of the musical games. If the games proposed seem too difficult for you, it is up to you to suggest new ones, adapted to your level and designed with your own rules.

Don't forget to practise the improvisation exercises from Lesson 7 (pages 85, 86) regularly, so that you'll be ready for the next lesson.

Good luck!

I thank Geoff (GeoffB) who has helped in the translation of my lessons into English.

Hi, Ladies and Gentlemen,
This month student assignment music sheet break down is here.
Assignments are
1.LIAISONS - LEGATURE - SLURS – LIGADOS
2.ANDANTINO
3.SAUTEUSE opus 59

This month, we have been asked to participate in a musical game.Mr.Delcamp gave the link for musical games.
In our class, if some one is more aware, how to play musical games? I'm least aware of.No idea at all.I will participate with any individual or group. :)

IMPROVISATION:Musical improvisation (also known as musical extemporization) is the creative activity of immediate ("in the moment") musical composition, which combines performance with communication of emotions and instrumental technique as well as spontaneous response to other musicians.[1] Sometimes musical ideas in improvisation are spontaneous, but may be based on chord changes in classical music,[1] and many other kinds of music. One definition is a "performance given extempore without planning or preparation."[2] Another definition is to "play or sing (music) extemporaneously, by inventing variations on a melody or creating new melodies, rhythms and harmonies."[3]
Encyclopædia Britannica defines it as "the extemporaneous composition or free performance of a musical passage, usually in a manner conforming to certain stylistic norms but unfettered by the prescriptive features of a specific musical text. Music originated as improvisation and is still extensively improvised in Eastern traditions and in the modern Western tradition of jazz."[4] wiki

ANDANTINO definition:an Italian tempo marking meaning a tempo that is slightly slower than Andante (although in some cases it can be taken to mean slightly faster than Andante) (78–83 BPM)

SLUR definition:A slur is a symbol in Western musical notation indicating that the notes it embraces are to be played without separation, i.e. with legato articulation. A slur is denoted with a curved line generally placed over the notes if the stems point downward, and under them if the stems point upwards:wiki
Played by "Hammer-On" on ascending,"Pull-off" on descending.

Hi, Classmates,
I collected this information from "Musical Games Introduction" forum and posting it here.

"D02 2 players, 4 notes, 3 days, 1 voice
"D02" means that the game is second year level.
"2 players" means that the work is to be constructed by 2 players.
"4 notes" means that each player invents a sequence of 4 notes.
The work is under construction for 3 days.
"1 voice" means that the collective work is monophonic.
The rhythm is free and modifiable.
The first player records a sequence of 4 notes, the second player repeats what his predecessor played and completes his phrase by adding another sequence of 4 notes to it. In his turn, the first player repeats what the previous player played and adds another 4 notes. At the end of 3 days, one of the players finishes off the collective work with a concluding phrase and indicates in his post that the work is completed. If a contribution does not fit the specifications, the other player can ignore it or adopt it, but it is advisable to reject contributions that are above the level proposed and which would put the other player in difficulty.

I don't quite get these musical games. Anybody wants to try something like: X players (everybody can play), 4/4 time, 8 notes, arpeggio form (easier to guess the notes from listening to someone's else playing)?

Hi, Chu Bun,
I'm ready to participate in a first simple game of 4/4,4 notes, three days, single voice, video audio recorded and passed my recorded notes to the other player.Other player will record his audio video first by playing my 4 notes, than add his 4 new notes to the recording. Other player will forward his notes to me.I will play the previous 8 notes plus 4 additional notes totalling to 12 notes or three measures. This back and fourth continue between the two players for three days. Finally the first player conclude the game and it stops there. This is what I understood reading the musical game forum. To begin We can select G maj scale as game starter.
You play "G,A,B,C" record the audio video and forward it.I will play your GABC play 4 of my notes DEF#G.I will record 8 notes and forward my video link to you.You will record 8 previous notes plus 4 new notes e.g taken from E minor scale. This will continue like this.If you are interested just jump in and let me know.

Zafar,

It just feels too random and aimless for me! Is it supposed to be audio only for ear training purposes? Why don't you start a new game and I'll follow.
