[PDF] Anon. - Oh Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree)

Postby pmiklitz » Sat Nov 28, 2015 2:36 pm

Dear All,

there seemed to be some demand for this, so here's my arrangement of Oh Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree) fresh from the press.

Enjoy and let me have some constructive feedback,

Peter

I like your arrangement. It catches the disappointment of the guy whose disloyal girlfriend is not as evergreen as the fir tree. And as a setting for the International, again, disappointment... I hope this is what you intended, and it's not just my slow and lugubrious playing!

Interesting associations :D Unfortunately, I had none of those in mind, so it must be you playing :desole: I recommend quarter notes at 90 to 100 bpm :casque:

As I suspected, not what you intended. I seem to make even the most boisterous drinking song sound like a lament for lost souls. New Year Resolution for 2016 - get up to speed, cut down on the rubato and vibrato, more fuoco and less doloroso.

In my feeble defence, I was taught (many decades ago) Joachim August Zarnack's version of the Silesian folksong. In his second stanza the lover contrasts the evergreen leaves of the fir with the false soul (falsch Gemute) of the girl who dumped him. The version by Ernst Anschutz is much more cheerful, and somehow got associated with Christmas, possibly by confusing the silver fir with the Norway spruce. (Though what that tree is doing in Roman Palestine is not obvious.)
