[PDF] Maragliotti, Jon - Sundanese Melody (Sabilulungan)

Post by jmaragliotti » Wed Jan 07, 2015 2:51 pm

For those of you out there who are interested in Indonesian-flavored music, I'm uploading a more recent composition. It's from a set of four pieces that I very liberally modified by broadening the harmony. Sundanese music has a hypnotic, relaxed swing to it, so the tempo can't be too fast. This isn't really an arrangement. You can be the judge. Sabilulungan is quite popular--you'll hear it at practically every Sundanese restaurant you eat at here.

Hi Jon,

could you please add the attachment? Indonesian flavored music is a very interesting broadening of repertoire...

Here's another song from the set of four. It's a bit challenging! Hope you enjoy it.

Jon

What is it about these pieces that gives it an Indonesian flavour? Is it a particular characteristic of the composition that would have a knowledgeable listener recognise as Indonesian?

Cheers
Peter

Sorry, I didn't include cautionary accidentals in the score for Tina Jandela. The g's in the upper voice in measures 8,9, 13 and 17 all remain sharped. Only the lower voice has g natural.

Peter, I based the pieces on some of my favorite recordings of Indonesian songs. The melodies are as close as I could get to the vocals. If you've ever heard Indonesian vocalists, you'd know it's not an easy task. They have their own way of embellishing music, which to western ears can be hard to grasp. The melodies I used for the four pieces four pieces should be quite recognizable. For example, you can listen to a rendition of Sabilulungan on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvWDw3qZXzw.

I might as well put the rest of the group up! Here's ku lucu melati. For a traditional version, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPa7BF_2fr4. I admit I took a lot of liberties here with the harmony and accompaniment. But I just love the melody!

The last of this set is more of an adaptation of my favorite Sundanese piece, longkewang, than an arrangement. The haunting melody and deeply brooding slow section don't lend themselves well to guitar, and I hardly did the song justice. But I loved it too much to not have given it a go. Mine is only a ghost of the traditional piece. See for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrIS-9Ub_68 .

Thank you Jon for all these new pieces from a totally different world of music.
They will be an interesting repertoire enrichment of the European players like me.

After listening to the YouTube performances of these pieces I'm more impressed than ever at the way you have interpreted and converted them (it's not just a matter of transcription) for solo guitar. Your version is surely more than what you modestly call a 'ghost': it is a solid, living thing that stands on its own feet, coloured by but neither better nor worse than the original. This seems to me the way cross-cultural influences should work.
