[PDF] Gounod, Charles - Ave Maria

Post by Schneider » Fri Oct 09, 2015 4:42 pm

Hi,

Here's a copy of the so called Tárrega's transcription.
In fact, I'm very much interested in a copy of the original edition. So far, I'm not 100% sure that Tárrega actually did this transcription.
Cheers,
Pierre

Unfortunately Stradivarius was a terrible painter and Rembrandt made lousy violins.

Does anybody know if this piece is in the Chanterlle's "Complete Early Spanish Editions" ?

Can't help you on the question but I have to say this is really a score of beauty!! I wonder how difficult it is to assemble such a score in Lilypond.

Thank you for your kind remark.
Actually, no it's pretty easy but I have to admit that I'm using LilyPond for years and I have some tricks for typesetting.
Fingerings take some times though.

I have all of Tarrega's transcriptions in a book called:
TARREGA
OPERE PER CHITARRA.
Vol. 4 - Trascrizioni;
Quarta Edizione Rivedudta e Ampliata
(Gangi-Carfagna.)
Edizioni BERBEN. Ancona. Italy
Copyright 1978

This collection contains 92 pieces allegedly arranged by Tarrega himself.
I also have a recording of this Ave Maria played by Fernando Espi on a CD dedicated to 16 of these transcriptions.
Pages 259-260 and 261 contain EXACTLY the same score you put here.
Though it says nowhere in the book, I suspect that the names (Gangi-Carfagna) might refer to the ones who did the fingering. In the case of the Ave Maria they are not the same as the ones you show.

Yep, I do have it too.

Humm, I don't think so. in fact, I'm not very confident with this edition (e.g., Berben does not show any grace notes).

Cheers,
Pierre

Hi All,

Thanks to Rob, I've found this manuscript :

Now I'd like to change the score title to:
aveMaria.png
But I'm not so sure about the dedication.
So, does anybody able to read the original dedication ?

TIA,
~Pierre

I haven't had time to compare every note against the original manuscript, but there are definite differences round about bars 24/5 and a few fingering differences. I'm very busy just now, but will try to get to it asap.

The literal translation of the manuscript is as follows:

"Meditation over the first prelude of Bach
Gounod

For guitar by Fran [co in smaller print, i.e.= Francisco] Tárrega

To my always dear friend el Sor. [short for "Señor"]
D. [Don] Ngvímero [the 1st two letters are not clear] de Zannoni

Tárrega"

Wow, thank you for the beautiful transcription. The on-going conversation is very educational. I never know Tarrega arranged for guitar the Bach/ Gonoud's Ave Maria. I know he arranged some Chopin's works for guitar.

This piece is one of my favorite. It's fun to play, it's good for the left hand also.
