Some kind of outer Mongolian banjo. I'm guessing. But it's definitely of the banjo family.

Do you think that it's a real instrument or just some weird-looking one-off that was made especially for the ad?
I've never seen one before FWIW but maybe someone here has one at home.

Agreed, if it's a real instrument it's a bass banjo of some kind.

Looks like some variation on a Japanese Biwa.
