Any luthier around Boston?

Postby richard_joh » Wed Feb 01, 2017 4:20 am

Hi,

Does anyone know a luthier around Boston? I recently acquired an old lute (renaissance) that needs an overhaul, but wonder what to do with it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard

Aaron Green, a member here, is in Groton about 40 miles from the middle of Boston. It might be worth contacting him.

Richard,
Was this the one on craigslist in Natick? It looked interesting, but just too far afield from my interests and abilities. Not sure if Aaron works on lutes, but I would definitely contact him since he would know where to send you.
Remember Anthony Weller, please help. Contact myself or Aaron Green for details.

I am an ex-Bostonian and know Aaron Green's work quite well--definitely contact him. If Aaron cannot do the job he will know who can. There use to be a violin/cello/bass repair shop in the vicinity of Berklee--cannot remember the name of it or if it is still is business. I also recall a guitar repair person on Boylston St. but again do not know if he is still in operation.
be true to the one you love but have many flings with different guitars

Aaron Green would be my first choice. if you don't want to travel outside of boston Peter Stokes (Broken Neck guitar repair) and Mark Herbert (Pat Metheny"s guitar tech) are both excellent. Peter has his shop near berklee school of music and Mark is in Brookline.

Aaron Green did a major guitar restoration for me and I can attest to his superb work. If Aaron's not available for your project, you might try up-and-coming luthier Toby Rzepka in Portland, Maine, who builds wonderful classical guitars and viols, and who learned his craft in England and alongside Steve Connor as his apprentice.

That posting looks interesting, but mine is older and worse in condition. I have to decide first whether it is worth repairing mine.

Richard at Still River Guitars, in northeastern Connecticut, freshened up the French polish on my guitar a few years ago, and did a really nice job. He builds really nice guitars, too.

Mention Boston ..... Aaron Green is the first person to come to mind. Have been researching into different luthiers & came across quite a few of his guitars; heard them through videos posted & read much about him on the forum as well as outside. Impressive guitars & of course the restoration work that he's done on Bouchet guitars & all.....

I assume that it is a modern renaissance style lute as opposed to renaissance lute. If the latter, then a chat with the musical instrument department a museum would be an idea.

A few photos might allow some of the more experience people around here to make a few basic suggestions.
