A short comparison of Superlux S241 versus DPA 4011 (the predecessor of the current model DPA 4011a).
Here it is worth to take into consideration that Superlux really is a budget ic (I paid 89 Euro per piece) whereas DPA costs around 1500 Euro per piece these days. Make your math and let me know your conclusions
Both are cardiod mics; both went simultanously mono through Zoom TAC-2. Tracks only normlized with no further processing whatsoever.
Thanks for the comparison(s), sure the Superlux is decent for a cheap mic but the DPA is really on another level, much smoother sound and less noise (listening through Focal monitors and AKG headphones). One is a cheap microphone for home use and the other is a professional microphone. Is the price difference is justifiable? It really depends on the use, a €3000/pair of SDCs is not needed by most just to post videos on youtube but these DPAs are for professional use and are rightfully used on numerous classical recordings.
In this context I should divulge the secret that our forum member Gabasa provides highest class modification of the already fanatsatic AKG C460B. He uses the same schematics as the famous Jim Williams mod (do your own research) but much better parts. I have two of C460Bs modified by Gabasa and further two are just on their way to me.
They beat DPA 4011 or DPA 4003 130V (I have pairs of both) clearly in quietness, plasticity and faithfullness and 3-dimensionality of the sound... (as one can find in the internet, Jim Williams mods of the C460B already did).
So if you want a pairs of mics for highest professional recording of classical guitar, this is my recommendation.
