GB £.2995 Bert Kwakkel Merula cedar 2001, London/St. Albans

Postby UKsteve » Sun May 22, 2016 4:15 pm

Bert Kwakkel classical.
Year: 2001
Scale length: 640mm
Top: cedar
Back and sides: Brazillian rosewood
Fingerboard: Ebony:
Condition: Used.
Price: £2995 GBP
Viewing: London or St. Albans UK.

I’ve decided to sell on my Bert Kwakkel Merula guitar.

This is a serious concert guitar – Mr. Kwakkel has made over 500 guitars, many of which are in the hands of top-flight professionals, including Matthew McAllister (who titled one of his albums “Merula” after his Kwakkel), Ian Watt, and Amanda Cook (loads more on the Kwakkel website). Indeed, it was hearing the fabulous tone of Ms. Cook’s guitar on her incredible “Selected guitar works of William Lovelady” CD that led me to search out a Kwakkel. She recorded that on an Indian guitar; this is Brazilian. I am the second owner, and imported this from Europe. There are loads of YouTube clips of Kwakkels if you need to hear some. It’s a strong, projecting tone, beautifully clear and separated, and with lots of sustain, suitable for a professional or amateur who’s serious about their guitar playing.

Specs are as follows: Cedar top, genuine Brazilian back and sides. Scale length 640mm. Nut width 50mm. Standard neck profile. Comes with a Hiscox case. Also has two saddle for low and medium action. It’s so easy to play, I’ve never bothered with the “low” saddle.

It’s in good condition for a used guitar. No cracks or anything structural. Being cedar, there are a few dings on the top, which I’ve tried to show on the pics.

Here are a couple of links to recordings of this guitar. The first is my cackhanded rendition of Cook’s superb “Curlew” and the second is Andrew York’s “Avenue of the Giants”. Nothing fancy – just an iPad and an Apogee Mic recorded quite close to the guitar, but should give you enough info to know that this is a serious instrument:

https://soundcloud.com/stevehhh/avenue-of-the-giants

New, this would cost 6500 euros from Mr. Kwakkel, with VAT taking it to 7,800 euros (approx. £ 6035 GBP). I’m looking for just £3,495 for a Brazilian, top-flight guitar.

Given it’s Brazilian, I’m not keen to export this out of the UK. I will do so if pushed, but only if you accept the chance (albeit small) that it may get seized – I took that chance myself when getting it into the UK, which happened without a hitch. I could probably deliver in mainland England to avoid shipping it. Please PM me if serious and interested in trying it. I can show it in either St. Albans or London, UK.

Cheers,
Steve

Many thanks!

IIRC, you have a Kwakkel yourself?

Hi Steve,
Looks fabulous! If I didn't already own an almost identical guitar (mine's a 650mm) I would be very interested. These a superb concert guitars.

Out of interest, what is the string spacing at the nut?

Totally agree and the number of pro. players using them is proof of this.

It's 43.5 mm centre of high E to centre of low E, which is pretty much standard I think?
Playability is excellent. No issues whatsoever. Great action with plenty of saddle. Very comfortable guitar.

Everybody is watching the football! :-) Lovely guitar. If I didn't have a house full of my own I would think about it.

Looke guys and gals, I need to get this sold so I have DROPPED THE PRICE from 3495 to 2995 GBP. That is extremely good value for a guitar of this quality, especially with the pound so low at the moment.

I've also redone my stab at York's "Avenue of the Giants" because, frankly, the first version was c**p!
So, here is the guitar as of last week:

https://soundcloud.com/stevehhh/avenueo ... ntsoct2016

I can also send a YouTube link of it if you are seriously interested.

MODS - are you able to edit the title to reflect the price drop please, or reinstate my ability to edit my own posts on this thread?

EDIT: many thanks for doing that!
