Villalobos Etude 1 Misprint.

Postby eusebius » Sat Jul 09, 2011 9:44 pm

Villa-Lobos' "Collected Works for Solo Guitar" Max Eschig edition, there is a misprint in the fifth to last measure. The fifth to last measure is supposed to be repeated and then the fourth to last measure repeated. I know this because I study classical guitar with someone who studied with Abel Carlevaro, and Carlevaro was told by Villa-Lobos that this is the correct way. Thought I would share it with everyone.

Here's a bunch more from a poster over on Google Groups - examine them for yourself :D

Etude No. 1
bar 19: first note should be E, not F# (Eschig and Noad)
bar 22/23 and 24/25: repeats in Eschig, none in Noad (O.K.)

Etude No. 3

bar 14: Noad corrects the first note of 3rd quarter to d, I prefer the
Eschig e.

Noad has corrected the string number in the last bar from 3 to 5

Etude No. 4
bar 15: (fith system first note) first quarter not repeated in Eschig,
added in Noad
third quarter, 2nd sixteenth: f# added in Noad
bar 27: third quarter d# in Eschig, corrected to d in Noad
bar 38: second quarter a in Eschig, corrected to a# in Noad
bar 47: (last system of page 2) first quarter imo: f (natural sign
missing in both editions)

Etude No. 5
bar 10: second note in middle voice is corrected from e in Eschig to b
in Noad
bar 48: (third bar of poco meno) middle voice in Eschig e, eb in Noad.
IMO e is better.
Harmonic progression in poco meno is:
Fm C7|F#dim7b (dominant to g-minor)|Gm Gm6|Bdim7b (dominant to C)|Am
I don't like Eb-major in bar 48.

Etude No. 6
Page 2, first bar: first chord in Eschig is unplayable (c-d-f#-g).
Noad omits f#.

Etude No. 7
bar 29: 2nd half chord d-g-b-d#-f## in Eschig,
Noad corrects to: d#-g#-b-d#-f## (+open string g)

Etude No. 9
bar 9, 26: top voice in Eschig and Noad f#-e-e-d#, suggestion:
f#-e#(or f)-e-d# (see bar 50)
bar 21: 2nd not in middle voice Eschig c#, Noad corrects to h
bar 38: suggestion 2nd quarter top voice: g#-c#-e#-f#, 3rd quarter
g-b-e-f (see bar 50)
bar 42: (last page first bar) 3rd note of 2nd beam group is c in
Eschig, c# in Noad, Eschig is correct (see bar 40)
bar 43: last but one note is a# in Eschig, Noad corrects to h
bar 51: 2nd note of 3rd beam group is f in both editions. Should be f#

Etude No. 10
bar 16: both editions d, should be d# like in bar 13
bar 33: fingering (both editions) 2 - 4, should be 1 - 4

Etude No. 11
bar 10: first chord reads b-d-e in Eschig, Noad corrects to a-d-c
bar 49: (2nd bar ofpoco meno) Eschig string indication D-G-B, Noad
corrects to A-G-B
bar 50: Eschig half note e deleted by Noad
bar 51: 3rd quarter d turned to half by Noad
bar 54: 2nd beam group in Eschig misprinted, Noad corrects (like first
beam group)

Etude No. 12
bar 5: top voice 6th and 7th note a# in both editions, suggestion: a
bar 13: last note of 2nd beam group a in both editions, suggestion: a#
page 4, first system, last bar: g in second beam group (Eschig)
corrected to e by Noad

Thanks, Aryeh!

That list popped up somewhere on the forum a while ago. I printed it out and stuck the page in with my Eschig edition of the Etudes.

I suggest you all do the same.

I'm studying this piece but I dont know what does it clearly mean in the misprint section fifth and fourth measure. Could you explain this to me? Thank you very much!

Music is a big continent with different landscapes and corners. Some of them I do visit frequently, some from time to time and some I know from hearsay only ...

At IMSLP website you find 1928 manuscript where you can find the missprints and some Villa-Lobos fingerings. It is already in public domain in some countries that is the reason you find it there for free.
