Malancioiu, Gabriel - Badriya for guitar - Video

Post by Costin Soare » Wed Jun 08, 2016 7:06 pm

Dear friends,

Here is a video with a work called Badriya of one of the (unfortunately) very few Romanian composers who deals in a very inspired way with the guitar, Gabriel Malancioiu. This is the first rendition of this work at 'George Enescu' National Museum, Bucharest, during the third 'guitar evening', Musica del Delphin, of the „Guitar Evenings” Festival, 4th edition, autumn 2014.

For more info about Gabriel Malancioiu and some other guitar works, you can visit his website: http://www.gabrielmalancioiu.org/list-of-works.html

:merci: Very nicely played - though not a work I find myself immediately warming to! The title is a girl's name I presume?

Thank you! According to the composer, Badriya is an Arab name which means approximately „the one who resembles the full moon”. The work is based on the idea of complementarity/bipolarity: lyrical-energic, big melodic leaps-smaller ones, normal playing-pizzicato playing and so on...

Best wishes!

That was difficult to listen too. Calling any of it melodic is a stretch to me. It's possible I am just not polished enough to understand or appreciate it. I listened to it twice..... Sorry.....

Basically, in the contemporary music world there are composers who look more for „understandable” things, creating music which can become very popular and composers who are more eclectic, with a more „profound”, if I may say so, approach, whose works are rarely played, although they can be very good. There are a lot of things involved in the perception and understanding of contemporary music and finally it is probably a matter of taste and aroma, as a good friend was saying :)
Of course, we can talk for days about this subject...
