Classical guitar players who write their own music?

Post by twistedblues » Thu Mar 23, 2017 6:00 pm

Anyone have some suggestions for classical guitar players to check out who avoid doing covers and primarily write their own music?

Stephen Yates.

That guy is criminally underrated. Try his album "stories in the strings" or simply search "Stephen Yates classical guitar" on the tube.

I am not sure about primarily, but Celia Linde plays her own pieces https://youtu.be/Hkpno7ItQ9M.

A second shout for Andrew York! He performed here recently, and I enjoyed it a lot.

I'd just add that he publishes and has compositions that are accessible even at my level. I was given "Snowflight" and "Spider Dance". The first is haunting and beautiful. The second is a technical challenge for me because it's in 7/8.

I haven't seen anyone mention Gary Ryan. Here's something I find quite interesting:

edit: cleaned my glasses... and now I see Gary Ryan mentioned three posts up.

His compositions are quite good and not too hard. I played his "Lament" at my daughter's confirmation a couple of years ago.
