How many of these Apps do you use?

Talk about things that are not necessarily related to music or the guitar.

How many of these Apps do you use?

Post by simonm » Sat Jun 10, 2017 11:22 am

Elpais has two articles today about apps. I was familiar with only 3 of these by name had have only every looked at one of them (soundcloud).

Playstation (app )
Venmo
Twich
MeetMe
GroupMe
Tinder
Soundcloud
WattPad
Xbox One (app)
Snapchat

The criterion for the list above is that 70% of the users (presumably only in USA) are "Millennials".

I had also never heard of the the concept of eSports (Twitch). eSports as an occupation/pastime although not the moniker go back to the 1970's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESports#E ... .931989.29

The second article is entitled "18 essential apps for traveling" (in Spanish) (http://elpais.com/elpais/2017/05/26/fot ... 32418.html)

Most of the stuff is predictable enough but two jumped out at me: a vpn for your smartphone and app locating free-wifi spots and connects automatically. Interesting that a mainstream newspaper reckons a vpn app is essential for travelers.

none

I've heard of playstations and xboxes, but don't have any interest in games. Although I enjoyed the occasional flash game 10 or 15 years ago.

I used to like to play "Post Office" and "spin the bottle," but that was a LONG time ago!

vpn?

I've heard of a few of those but don't use any.

I live in the country where the sights, sounds and smells can't be found where humans cluster in cities. Frequently guests arrive (mostly younger, but not always) and instead of walking down to the river will look it up on the internet. It's so much more informative that way as you can find out turbidity, temperature, flow rates etc. while looking at pretty pictures. And to fill out the experience open an app that plays bird songs. And when exhausted from all that, open an app to view a fire in a fireplace.

I have relatives that introduce these electronic gadgets to their 6 month old children. Perhaps it's the norm now. I can remember when plastic baby carriers were frowned upon because they essentially interfered with the sense of touch that was thought to be important to a baby. At least that was
the reaction of the luddite grandmothers I knew.

It would be interesting to know if the tactile depravation of plastic baby carriers is related to low popularity of "spin the bottle" in later life.

Never heard of either of these but I expect I knew at least one of them with a different name. Kids (old-fashioned) games were probably similar everywhere.

How heartening it is to see that most respondents answer, "none."

I have yet to find a hole in my life that required an "app" to fill it.

By the by - the word "essential" appears to have changed its meaning recently.

I use soundcloud to post songs for friends but would never consider using to actually promote my music because of the autoplay feature. Basically if someone listens to one of my songs it then goes on to play other random user's music (even an issue with premium paid accounts). Problem with that is that most people assume it's autoplaying my songs and make comments to me about them. Like, "I liked the song you posted but loved the other one it played after. I never knew you had such a beautiful singing voice.". It can be quite embarrassing when actually promoting yourself to have to explain that you didn't make the second song.

As far as the others go, I don't use any of them. Mainly because I'm not a millennial.
