Having had brain surgery, I would call that a last act of desperation.
You never know how well it will go and what you might lose. I had a choice of bilateral blindness or the chance avoiding that, but the possibility of other complications from surgery. Since I am very visual, to me, the decision was a "no brainer" .
Even if one can't play your instrument, you don't lose the ability to live a musical life; just not the one you had...
Everyone has to make their own decision, but no surgery is without risk.
When the sun shines, bask.
