What was the first single you bought?

Post by tom3949 » Tue Aug 15, 2017 11:27 am

This one has probably been done before, but as I couldn't find the topic after doing a brief search of the site, I thought I would give it go, (as I lounge here by the pool on the last day of my holiday in Majorca :D )

If you don't know what a 'single' is - then you're probably far too young! Nothing to do with a dating site.

So the question is what is the first single or album you bought? I thought it would be interesting to see the diversity of musical tastes amongst the classical guitar community. I for one am definitely of the classic rock persuasion - and to start things off ...

First single - Blockbuster by the sweet

First album(s) - Paranoid by Black Sabbath (given to me), and Made in Europe by Deep Purple (purchased).

All definite indicators of my musical origins!

I don't remember my first single, but my first album was "Yakety Sax," by Boots Randolf. When I started band in high school, I wanted to play a tenor sax. The band director had a used clarinet for sale, and he convinced my dad and mom that it would be a good starter instrument for me. I loved it! I still have it, and play it occasionally.

Don't remember for sure, but looking through my old original collection of 45 rpm singles I believe it was "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" by Jimmy Rodgers (wow, I'm sure dating myself, eh?). It was either that one or "Oh Boy/"Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly & The Crickets. As for my first LP, it was "Chet Atkins Studio", which I still have. An interesting thing about the 45 "Oh Boy": it was released as Oh Boy by the Crickets--Buddy Holly's name was not on the label.

Single: Agent Double O Soul sung by Edwin Starr
Album: Ricky Nelson. Cannot remember the title but he was wearing a bright yellow sweater.
Ahhhhh.
My tastes have always been eclectic... Now back to my Leon Russell and Roberto Aussel YouTube videos.

The only singles I ever bought were No More Heroes by the Stranglers followed by Frog in A Water by Errol Scorcher.
After that I bought albums - couldn't see the point in singles. Saw even less point in CD singles.

I received my first record player as a Christmas present when I was 11, and people had also bought me some singles. I remember one by The Beverley Sisters  (can't remember the title), and another was It's Now or Never by Elvis.

It was a while before I could afford an album - my first was Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs - still got it.

But for you real oldies out there, I was also given a few 78s, the only one of which I can recall is Whispering Grass by Hoagy Carmichael. How's about that then

I never bought a single, but the first one I heard was Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel," with "I A'int Nothing But A Hound Dog" on the flip side.

The first single that I bought was Led Zeppelin's Hey Hey What Can I Do. The first lp that I bought was Queen's The Game. Still have both. The most interesting record that I have was given to me after my grandfather died. It was Chuck Phillips (my grandfather) and Johnnie (the organist). 33rpm and the size of a single, and it had four songs on it. My grandfather played drums before WWII and sang, supposedly in a guy named Dorsey's band. I still don't know who that is, but I remember the old lady's at the retirement home seemed to be impressed by it.

Easy question - zip, nada, zero, none. I have never bought a single in my life.
