R.U. Serious?!

Post by Pat Dodson » Fri Oct 06, 2017 6:29 pm

A 1,000-year-old bowl from China's Song Dynasty has sold at auction in Hong Kong for almost US$38m (£28m) - a record for Chinese porcelain.

Sotheby's, the auction house, said the rare Ru-ware brush-washer sold after 20 minutes of tense bidding from a handful of phone bidders, and one in the room.

The little piece measures 13cm (5in) across and is glazed in a blue-green colour.

Looks like a £5.00 Ikea cereal bowl to me. I guess that's why I'm not an antiques dealer.

Virtually anything.

Spending this amount of money on a bowl (and, honestly, not a terribly attractive one, at that), is obscene.

Why spending $38m when you can buy such a bowl for $3 on a flea market:

Just one interesting comparison. Hurricane Irma damaged 90+% of all buildings on Barbuda. The entire population of 1800 people were evacuated to shelters in Antigua, which itself sustained damage. There is no electricity on the island and no safe water. Schooling and livelihoods are devastated and the inhabitants are unlikely to be able to return for many months, perhaps years.

One month after Irma struck the aid pledged to Barbuda from countries around the world totals $16m.

If those bidders couldn't quite get to U$38m. but might have been "comfortable" with a touch less,

that's maybe 150 million dollars just floating around looking for bowls to buy. :|

This is the perfect example of the "bigger fool" market. What's that bowl worth? However much you can convince some fool to pay for it!

And if someone has $38 million to spend on such a bowl, they control far far too much money and have spent it in a highly irresponsible manner. Or maybe worse :: they will probably use it to feed their cat. I'm seriously disgusted.

Whether the $38 mil was wasted depends on what the seller does with the money. Perhaps he or she plans to donate the money to hurricane victims.
(Well,okay, probably not)

People who can spend that money on trinkets live on a different planet - when you are in one of the wealthiest 1,000 families on the earth everything looks different in a way I cannot fathom. Most likely the purchase will be through some sort of legal entity that means the whole lot will be tax deducted in some way or another in any case.
Hmm … I wonder if I painted some guitars blue could I flog a few for stupid money. (Yes, I know about the blue collection :-)).

this is inflation
I hope that next time I need a bowl the prices won't start with 6 numbers

If the item were to have slipped from the auctioneer's hands, splintering into pieces, would we have "lost" US$38m?

The way I see it, the $38m sale was, in effect, simply a transfer of money from one entity to another. This enormous future claim on the 'output of others' (goods, assets, labour, services) still exists. Perhaps the only thing lost is that we would all be somewhat culturally the poorer for having lost an artefact from an age long past.

You could spend billions of Reichsmark on a loaf of bread in prewar crisis Germany.
These people live in a parallel world where 1$ is worth nothing. They need truckloads of money to just buy a bowl... take care not to get in tht parallel universe!

PS we also live in some parallel worlds. I think the people from Puerto Rico mentioned above could have the same attitude about spending 10,000 US$ on a classical guitar as we about the bowl.
Music is a big continent with different landscapes and corners. Some of them I do visit frequently, some from time to time and some I know from hearsay only ...
