Talk about things that are not necessarily related to music or the guitar.

The cd, "Blue Yonder," by Pat Donohue. He is coming to New Bern this month! Pat Donohue.....of the "All Star Shoe Band" with Prairie Home Companion......is performing at the Down East Folk Arts Festival later this month. The last time I saw him, I had to drive eight hours!

I suspect 3 discs are going to be overkill and a half.

Steven Osborne, a really superb Messiaen pianist, playing Messiaen's Vingt Regards (which he has also recorded on CD)

As I am reading Jan Caeyers' excellent biography on Beethoven these days:

ATOS Trio: Beethoven Piano Trio op.1 no.3 in c-minor.

What a genius, even so early in his life. Although the sound of Mozart and Haydn is still audible, op 1 already shows the future own direction of Beethoven's composition style. Haydn rejected the third one of the three trios in c minor and he stated that the audience might not be prepared for such a "modern" style. Imagine Haydn would have had the chance to comment on Beethoven's last string quartets. That was modern...

One might argue that "Capriccio Espagnol", "Pictures at an Exhibition", and "The Firebird Suite Round Dance of the Princesses" do not belong on the guitar, but Caballero certainly makes a convincing case. Staggeringly good playing and very good sound.

"Nadine," on the cd, "Scene it All," by the bluegrass band, "Seldom Scene." We saw them in concert last Saturday night in an old converted movie theater in Liberty, NC, and they did "Nadine" and several covers of other popular songs, like James Taylor's, "Sweet Baby James." Everybody in there was swaying to the music! Incidentally, Sunday morning, I was in the motel lobby, and Fred Travers, their dobro player, was getting a cup of coffee. I went over to him and we started talking, and we talked for half an hour or so. He was impressed that I had driven four hours to see them. Another band member....Dudley Connell, the guitar player.....came down to the lobby and joined in the conversation. It was snowing beautifully outside, and the three of us stood there and talked and looked at the snow coming down.
