Let's put the things then like this: Imagine you were invited to travel to Andromeda and the only thing that you could take with you would be a few non-classical albums to demonstrate the inhabitants there what music is. I have many favorite albums of course. Another one is Oregon "Distant Hills" - this makes part of my Andromeda special selection.

Sounds like H.G. Wells. I'd bring those that I listed and know that I've forgotten something.

I'll go progressive rock on this one. I really like Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a conceptual album on the transcendence of one's spirit after death. The complexity of all instruments, together with the recurrence of several riffs and melodies from their 1990s' Metropolis I from album Images and Words managed to capture me 10 years ago. I feel it's an album to be heard as a whole, although one can enjoy a particular song from time to time. Note: one of their song is extremely syncopated, which would make it a treat for most rythm-changing-piece-lovers.

Non-Classical? Hmmm ... That pretty much eliminates 99% of my album collection!

Old Friends, a collection of Simon & Garfunkel.
December by George Winston.
Time Traveller, a collection of the Moody Blues.
The music of Bill Monroe, a collection of Bill Monroe.

Almost everything else is Classical!
Ramirez 4NE, Ramirez R4 and Ramirez R1

I second the vote for Billie Holliday. I am completely obsessed. For slightly more unusual choices I highly recommend Silvio Rodriguez. He has a spectacular voice and is a great singer/songwriter. He is also great to sing along withnif you are a tenor or a soprano-- great for the boredom of those long intergalactic flights. Finally, my most obscure pick for English speakers. Vintage Maxime le Forestier. Not his recent stuff which is ok but not exciting but his very old tunes. If I had a very long and boring flight I might throw in some older Gordon Lightfoot albums (can you tell I like singing along and higher pitched voices?) and maybe some Cesaria Evora--obviously challenging for someone with no lower range to sing along with but fun to listen to. Maybe also some Paris Combo. Ok. I give up. Stuff the darn spaceship full or get an ipod.
