Strings for Ramirez 1a

Postby Laudiesdad69 » Tue Dec 27, 2016 10:38 am

Hey, are there any of you 1a owners that have a recommendation for strings for a '67 1a. Does yours require longer strings than the standard Augustine fare? My friend has a music store and recently took a 1a in on consignment. We are trying to "wake" her up after years of sitting in the case. The new strings on it appeared to be D'Addario of some flavor. It sounds dead with the strings that are on it. We want to try Augustine Classic Red on it, but don't know if the standard Augustine strings will be long enough. Also, do you know what the scale length probably is. I will have to measure it, but don't have a metric tape measure.
Suggestions?

It will almost certainly be a 664mm scale.

Unless you wast too much string length at the bridge, all classical strings will fit the former "reference" for classical guitars.

In case of Augustin pay most attention to the d string string, which is sometimes claimed to be relativly short even for 650 mm scale guitars!

I have put Augustine strings on my 664mm Conde in the past. One of the strings was a bit on the short side (probably the D string) and needed a bit of care when fastening to the tuner roller (I think I used a pair of tweezers to manipulate the string end).

I use Savarez Cristal/Corum mediums with a Savarez Alliance G on my '78 1a; they balance the dark tone of the guitar nicely.

I concur with the Savarez option (I've tried different tensions, it's your preference). Another benefit of the Savarez sets is that for a guitar (1979 1a) that I rarely play, they seem to last forever sitting idle in the case!

I'd like to add
Aquila Perla Classical Guitar Strings - normal tension.
Sweet and bright, especially on a deep toned ceder top
like a Ramirez 1A. They really bring out the trebles
in a nice way. Also they are very reasonably priced.
