A-string sounds muffled

Post by Ludwig » Wed Aug 23, 2017 12:05 pm

I don't know where to post this question, so I post it here.
What can be the reason when the A-string sounds muffled and dull. Across the whole fretboard. There is nothing loose inside, the other strings sound bright and "normal". It is very severe and playing is no fun!

Thank you

If it is across the entire fretboard it isn't a resonance issue. Sounds like you need to put on some new strings or try a different brand. Bass strings will generally sound dull after 1-2 months of regular playing.

Ludwig, knowing guitar and strings could help to give a more detailed analysis!?

The more you re-string, the more you will find a bad one. It doesn't happen often, but it can be really annoying. I had D strings that were unraveling...same brand, even though I bought new packs.

Sometimes you get the unlucky string that somehow passed quality control. Now imagine working in a string factory...even automated machines can be human :)

Definitely try another string, or even brand of string. What strings were you using and how old were they?
