How many sets do you buy when you try

Post by Laudiesdad69 » Thu Dec 21, 2017 5:15 am

When I try a new to me string set, I usually buy two sets. Then, when I mangle a string, I have a replacement handy, and then I can evaluate the set as a whole. I just wondered if anybody else does this. I've got about 18 or so sets that are left over from trying strings in the last year, and I will be using some of them on guitars that I have for sale. I tried 25 different sets in the last uear.

I'm pretty much settled in. I use La Bella for my C3F- the only one I tried.
Hannabach for my Ramirez - the only one I tried
J45 ' s for my other 6 stings- " " " " "
I tried Aranjuez for my 10 string. I liked the 7th string but a couple of the others kept breaking. When they broke, I replaced them with J45's. I have a set of Aquilas that I'll try next time I change, but I'll keep the Aranjuez 7th.

If, I don't like the sound, I don't blame the strings.

Typically, I'll buy 2 sets of a new brand. But if I hate 'em (it's happened) that second set won't be used. So like you, I have maybe 10 sets or so of strings I've decided I don't like. Took a while to ultimately choose.

Since I am still in love with the Savarez Cantiga basses. I tend to purchase only treble sets. I've been buying 2 sets at a time.

Are Cantiga basses available as bass sets only - or singles ? I can't find a source - only for sets with various treble options ?

Strings by mail sell them as bass sets and singles, and they ship worldwide. They sell a lot of brands this way. Our resident string guru, PETERMC61, gets strings from them and they ship to Australia. I get Cantiga as bass sets from them and use them with Dogal Diamante trebles.

I've used those sets before. A great value string. You might want to try Ernie Ball clear and silver. They are really good sounding nylon strings. Great for sensitive nuanced players. 3 sets for $12.99 from e - b a y.

1 set. So far I never had a string break on me. The last sets I used for ca 100h (3 month). I base my judgement on the period 2 weeks to two month after new. After that period so far I’d like to try something different to gain more experience.

That would take me a year or one a half to get through.

I'm currently on the Cantiga set. I really like them and will try other Savarez lines for a while. I was a previous Hannabach/La Bella/Romero user, but I like the mix/matching of the Cantiga set so far. I may go back to Romero's after this as well, because the sound stuck out in my head.
