Cleaning Machine Heads

Post by bobbyboy » Wed Aug 09, 2017 3:28 pm

I have a 1963 EL Clasico guitar, the tuners are grimy and blackened with grease, dirt and grime. I can hardly turn the tuners. The rollers are orange colored from age.
Is there a solution I can place the tuners in to clean without damage. Can I buy new rollers,
these rollers have the square bottom that's fits in the worm gear.
Thanks

BB,
Rollers may be available if you know who manufactured them. Maybe post a picture.
It is good that you are removing the machines for cleaning. There are many decreasing detergent cleaners available.
Odds are the tuners are worn out, but it can't hurt to clean them up and lubricate the gearing for testing!

If you have a local jeweler or watch repairman, you might ask him to run your tuners through his ultrasonic cleaner (offer to pay him, of course).
