Suggestions for beginner performance piece

Post by Guitar Nut » Fri Mar 31, 2017 10:09 am

I've been playing for just over a year, teaching myself, and am looking for suggestions of what performance piece I might learn next. I usually have two or three short practice pieces on the go at various stages of completion, but I like to have a more meaty piece to get my teeth into. So far I've committed the following pieces to memory:

Romance (probably beyond my skill but I played it so often it's now under the fingers)
Sor - Study in B Minor
Sor - Op. 60, no. 8
Giuliani - Vals Allegretto
Tarrega - Lagrima (beyond my skill level too but I persevered)
Mairi Bhan Og (a Celtic folk tune)

I had a look at Adelita but I think it's just a bit beyond me at the moment. I haven't fully learned the notes in the higher positions. Working them out for Lagrima took a long time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's probably a million different pieces that you could choose from--I'm surprised no one has responded to you yet.

Based on what you've written, my suggestion would be to take a look at Giuliani op. 40 no. 23. It's a lot of fun and is mostly played in the lower positions. It's not overly challenging, but, played up to speed, it can sound pretty flashy.

Thanks. I will look that one up.

(The Sor op. 60 I mentioned isn't the same as the one on this website. I got it from the Iceland Guitar School. https://www.classical-guitar-school.com/music/1022.pdf. Not sure if that's a mistake or not.)

Great question. Some suggestions:
* I'd download the Delcamp D02 and D03 and listen to the Delcamp channel for D02 and D03 (search on Youtube for "D03 music school") to see what pieces you like. I personally like a lot and am working on Ferrer y Esteve - Ejercicio 9 and Anonyme - Vals Sol majeur 1860. Ej 9 doesn't go to far up the neck, while the Vals Sol Maj could be good practice to move up down the neck.
* Hector Ayala - Cascabel or Celeste y Blanco
* Bartolome Calatayud - Waltz or Cancion de Cuna from 4 easy pieces
* Sagreras Lesson 62 and 65 on Book 1 (Youtube has a lot of videos of Sagreras lessons to help)
* Some variations on Greensleeves or Wilson's Wilde
* Sor Op 35 no 13
* Carcassi Op 60 no 3.
* Pavanne 1 by Luis Milan
* Tarrega - Estudio in e Minor or Andantino (both off Delcamp site)

Hope this helps. If you need help finding any of these, please PM me. Best,

Thanks, quite a few there to be going on with! I'll look them all up.

I'm already working through Sagreras. Very tuneful pieces, with a Spanish air. Some of them I can't stop playing!
