One thing I would say about left hand damping is that it very quickly becomes no more difficult than playing another note. In my view, you should be able to do both right and left hand damping, but you should use both sparingly. The guitar has a small voice when compared to other instruments and constant damping can kill this voice. Let it ring whenever possible.
