W.A. Mozart: Allegro (Eine kleine Nachtmusik)

Postby Tuomas Kourula » Thu Oct 09, 2014 5:53 pm

We shot a video of W.A.Mozart's Allegro from Eine kleine Nachtmusik last spring with my guitar orchestra. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. One thing bugs me about it: why do I have to grouch like that? Where's my good posture? :D

I think they are terrific. Thanks for sharing :-)

I have a group of students in Copenhagen, about the same age as yours. Perhaps one day we should visit each other?

Congratulations on your effort.

Kind regards Thomas

Thank you, Thomas! I'd like to hear your group - do you have some recordings or videos?

I have two guitar orchestras at the moment, for players of different ages. We're planning to record some more videos, probably in the spring. I'll post those as well :)

Well, thanks, Singvomblatt!

You can find the score and parts on my website. I don't think direct linking is allowed here, but you'll get the adress if you click on my name on the right.

A pleasure to hear.

Things I notice...

1) The arrangement works, musically. (IME that's not always the case with larger guitar ensembles. Rare, actually.)
2) The young man playing the prominent line (sitting in the corner) has quite a good expressive sense for the piece and a strong pleasing sound that rises, in just the right balance above the others.
3) The audio quality is clean and clear. It's like I'm there in the room (in that upper corner, suspended from the ceiling, haha. No, really, it's excellent.)
4) The visual quality is high res. It adds to the realism of the listening experience.
5) Tuomas, you look good in the vid despite your concern about stooping over. To me your leaning forward at times just shows you care about your students.

I'm a teacher also so I'm curious...
What did your student performers say about the video?

Lawler, thank you for taking the time to write such a well considered response!

1) Thanks! I think that having an octave guitar and two baritones really helps. In fact we're planning to acquire more of these special guitars in the future.
3) I used a Olympus LS-11 portable recorder, which turned out to work very well here. You can see it in the video. The room is one of the smaller concert halls at the conservatory, with a high ceiling, and that contributes greatly to the sound, of course.

We shot this video at our last rehearsal last spring, and so I unfortunately didn't get any immediate feedback from my students. When we saw each other again this fall, we talked about it, but you know young people, they have already moved on :)

But the great thing is, we're planning to make more videos this year!

I enjoyed the video. They did very well. Thanks for posting it.

As for your posture, I think this kind of leaning into the orchestra is quite common. I always thought it was a way for the conductor to engage with the orchestra - a difficult task with amateurs of any age.

In a word amazing. You have done such a great job with these young players and I can only imagine the good it must do for their sense of self worth and esteem. Well done and keep up the great work!!

Geez... I just witnessed 8 more guitarists better than me. I'll never get to be #1 now :applauso:

Thanks for your reply, Tuomas. Moved on... yes, I know exactly what you mean. And though it complicates some aspects of teaching, I've always felt that it's good in its renewal of artistic motivation... the feeling that everything's new. I remember so well being that age.
But the great thing is, we're planning to make more videos this year!
I look forward to it.
